After this post, I get the idea it won’t matter one little bit that I think being a Mod would be a noble way to somewhat re-pay the SDMB for the hours of interest and enjoyment that it has given me. I reckon I am locked into my niche of being a lightly noticed, vaguely amusing ne’er do well.
Which is probably for the best, because as a Mod my first act would be to ban the whole lot of you.

I would do it. The only thing I would worry about is my status as a member.
The mods here are great and I can’t believe some of the crap they have to put up with.
I wouldn’t mind doing it for a week or so to see what it was like. But any longer then that I’m not so sure!
I’m the manager (think Ed Zotti-type-level) of a much much larger community at a for-profit site.
I love knowing that people from all walks of life are connecting with each other through our community, and are discovering a lot about each other and hopefully a little about themselves too. I also like knowing that people who come to our community find it valuable and important, and that what they learn there helps them and their families and truly improves their lives.
I don’t do a ton of day-to-day intervention, my staff of admins and mods and forum leaders does that, but even with those 300-odd people dealing with the users there is a lot of time and heartache that goes into running a big and popular community. And probably a lot of people thinking very mean thoughts about me on any given day.
The Nazi comments roll right off of my back by now, in fact when a new mod gets called nazi for the first time we have a little virtual celebration “welcome to the group - you’ve been christened” sort of thing.
The worst part of it all is when you have to make a decision that isn’t fun and that users dislike. Hell sometimes even I dislike banning folks. I just tell the complainers that rules is rules and even someone you like can turn out to have been a big flaming…jerk…someplace that you didn’t see. Really, honestly I don’t ban folks for my own fun and enjoyment. Frustratingly, unlike here I can’t say zip publically about what went down, because we’ve got a super-strict privacy policy.
It is fun to ban someone mid-spam when they are in the process of hitting 30 or 40 forums. I’ll cheerfully admit that I get a little frisson of pleasure from that.
I have tremendous respect for the mods and admins here, I know what they go through and I wouldn’t do it for free. Or even for a mug.

No way. Even if I had a strong reputation here, it’s just way more work than I’m prepared to do.
I prefer to enjoy my time here. 
Just how much work- hours, please- is involved?
Can you do it part time? Are there shifts? Can another Mod call you on your decision and start a showdown, similar to the one in Platoon?
I don’t see how the mods can keep up with the volume of threads in most forums. I assume that they rely in some part on common Dopers to email them about possible infractions such as threats, trolls, double-triple-hundreds of duplicate threads, etc.
But yeah, I wouldn’t mind giving it a shot. I’ve got pretty thick skin and can put on an ass hat when I need to. I just don’t have the time at the moment.
I’m already a mod at another board. I don’t think I could handle two boards at once. This place is pretty big and I have a lot of respect for the mods who keep it in line.
I used to think that I would like to do it, but now I don’t.
I think Miller, Mangetout, and Jeff Olsen would make fine moderators.
Well, as long as their medication was regulated.
Could I? Yes. Would I? No. Far too much work and I often have gaps of two to four days where I won’t even go online, so I could never keep up.
Oh, and dantheman, you nearly had me spewing soup all over my monitor.
