Would you want to be a mod/admin here?

Just wondering how many here would actually want and be able to do the admin/mod job…

Would you want to? Would you have the time for it?

A lot of times I read the pit and see how many are disagreeing with some of the actions that they take. I also know that they have to read every topic in their appointed forum.

So, who here who is not already a mod would be willing to do this? Would you?

Would you seriously want to be a mod here knowing all the things it would take?

Are they volunteers or paid?

If the former, hell no.

No, I wouldn’t.
The mods here put up with a lot of shit - some may be deserved, a lot isn’t (at least from my point of view). To keep up with 40,000+ members and the related posts would drive me bananas - I was an admin on another unrelated board for a while before that board shut down, and that drove me nuts, with fewer than 1000 members.

Time would also be a huge factor for me - I work (part time, 2 jobs), I go to school (full time) and I have life that takes me away from the computer, as do the mods and admins here - I don’t see how they handle it.

Pros:

The respect of my peers, except for those who call me a Nazi.
Finally getting a peek at the secret mod forum(s?).
The rush of power, the thrill of control.
Er… the coffee mug.

Cons:

Hours and hours of work.
Being frequently hated, insulted, and called mean names.
Having to look at whatever horrors in fact lie in the secret mod forum(s).
Um… it’s possible that it isn’t even a high-quality coffee mug.

I’m not in the running for moddom, but if I were, I think I’d have to decline just because of the time it would involve. But if I had the time, I think it’d be interesting to try, if only for the behind-the-scenes look at the monument to human knowledge that is the SDMB.

I admin a much, much smaller board than this one. If anything, that smaller board might be harder in some ways because the people are so close, and when I have to put my evil nazi jackboots on, noses can get out of joint. In that regard, I think I’d rather be an SDMB mod (the SDMB mod gets much more shit hurled their way, but it’s less personal). HOWEVER, the sheer workload the SDMB guys do has me totally in awe. So, on balance, nope. I’m not nice enough to do all that work without getting paid.

People come here for entertainment. I suspect when one becomes a mod the entertainment value wanes as the work involved grows.

Hey, I have an idea. How about we run a mod-for-a-day contest?

That would ROCK!

No. No way.

They completely volunteer their time.
Oh, well, they do get a free SD coffee mug.

I actually would like to be a mod. I just feel like I have the temperament for it. But time is a major concern for me right now. Also, I still feel like a lurker, not an established poster, and I sort of feel like ‘valued community member’ is a requirement for modhood here.

I have a lot of respect for the moderators here. They do a hell of a job, especially considering the size of the community and number of posts per day.

I moderate a fairly active Fidonet message conference (yes, Fido is still around, just not quite as busy as it was before the Web blossomed). It’s got fewer people and lighter message traffic, and it’s quite enough work as it is. Truly a thankless job; few people see “behind the curtain” and realize just how tough it can be.

I appreciate the stuff the mods and admin do on this board, but as another 'Doper said before me… no way.

I have all the time in the world. I spend half my life on the internet already  but I wouldn’t be able to be a fair or good mod. I’d rather post without worrying how it affects my status as a member.

With that said, I was asked to moderate a band’s message board a while ago. I think it was because I was one of the more rational posters in that forum (hardly a surprise as everyone was using slanderous insults here and there) and they badly needed some moderators. I declined although the admin really needed help, I however, encourged him to find other mods and I was happy to email those mods if I came across a post that was inappropriate. So, I guess I’ve been a “junior mod” and I have no incentive to be on here either.

shrugs

I do have the time, but I don’t have their wit and charm.

I’m surprised how few there are. I’m the equivalent of a mod at another site, but there’s about 60 of us all told. Granted, the site is bigger, but still, I’d imagine they could use a couple more here to lighten the workload. It’s fun, but your enthusiasm wanes after you’ve been called nazi or chimp for the 854th time.

Are you kidding? I think you have to be, like, smart or something. And good looking. And, if you’re male, have an enormous penis. (If you’re female, your penis can be smaller.) And drive a really nice car.

Thus, I could never be a mod/admin. My car is a piece of shit. :stuck_out_tongue:

ew, can you not say the ‘p’ word so much?

I think that if I were a Moderator, I’d be too much of a softy to be effective. I’d try too hard to get people to get along when really all they want to do is scream and pull hair and fight dirty.

It would be an honor, but the time commitment would be too much. :frowning:

It would be great, but I’m not smart enough. Thanks Czarcasm for putting a lid on the “trash” earlier this evening.

Fuck no. The work load would be enormous.

The mods put up with an inhuman amount of nonsense. I’m constantly in awe that they don’t just start flipping out on everybody who posts something they don’t like after a while.

I’d like to try it out, just to get a better feel and appreciation for the level of hell they have to go through sometimes.
