Such as that Wrath of The Lich King keyboard overlay and that special gaming mouse?

Since I am still at a very low level 11 with my highest-ranking toon, is that overlay going to help me? (Besides that damn thing is VERY hard to find, y’all).

And since you all feel like a cordless mouse is a hindrance. I also want to get one of those for my new gasming computer I just ordered.

If you have either of those, could I get a Doper review of them please?

Thanks!

Quasi

I doubt the overlay is going to help you much. Plenty of us have learned to play perfectly fine without it, and the game is designed to ease you in slowly. Just teach yourself one thing at a time, and you’ll figure things out easily enough.

I don’t know what mouse you’re talking about, but one danger of cordless mice/keyboards is them going dead at the worst possible time. Our main tank caused an Ony wipe once because of that happening. “Everybody ready? Charge! Oh shit, mouse died…”

The only one I would even suggest (assuming you can find it) is the Blizzard Authenticator. It’s a few bucks online, and is used as part of your account security. Other than that, any accessory is mostly frills.

I assume the overlay has the buttons labeled? Like “C” = Character Sheet, “N” = Talents, etc? If you think that you’re having a hard time remembering which key does what, that may help you - as long as you don’t find all the labeled buttons confusing, that is!

For the mouse - get what you’re comfortable with. I agree that cordless items may go dead at bad times, and when I played EQ using one, I would sometimes find myself unable to move the mouse, and tab out of the game to find that it had been popping up frantic “battery low!” “battery REALLY low!” “omg battery almost dead!” messages behind the game for the last couple hours or so. If you’re good about changing batteries this probably won’t be a big deal for you.

Are you talking about the G5? I have one. It’s a very good mouse and I love it, but it’s wholly unnecessary for WoW’s needs. It’s the sort of thing you get for FPS games, not MMOs. As Ferret Herder says, find something you’re comfortable with and go with that.

You don’t really need a special gaming mouse unless you plan to be doing arena PVP and you’re going for high team rating. Hyper-competitive type stuff. For regular gaming, and average battleground pvp, a regular mouse is fine.

Thanks! That mouse isn’t cordless, though. The one I have now is and I agree, it slows things down a whole bunch. The mouse is by Blizzard Entertainment and SteelSeries.

Oak, is it true that I am not going to be able to solo and still get up to Level 80?

I’m gonna have to join a guild?

I sure like being a “sword for hire”, as it were!

And thanks about the mouse advice, I gues at some point I’ll be doing some PvP, right?

Hijacking my own thread again. Is this some kind of “trademark” for me, or what???
Thanks

It is absolutely NOT true. You can solo all the way to 80 if you want, and you never have to join a guild.

There are advantages to joining a guild, if you join a good one…friendly conversation, help with quests, reliable group-mates for dungeons/raids, but it is entirely optional.

Now, if you are unguilded, odds are you will never see the most difficult raid content in the game, but not everyone cares about that. Me, for instance. I did the uber/leet endgame raid thing in Everquest and EQ2. Not particularly interested in that play style again. I have done a couple of Kara raids with my guild, and sometimes group up for instances, but mostly I prefer to solo my way through Azeroth, and pvp in the battlegrounds.

That’s good to know, thank you, Oakminster!

There have been times when I was asked to join another player for a short time, and that has always worked out well for me (killed Goldtooth and got that necklace that way! :)), but I prefer to stay on my own.

Just an observation (and I wonder how many other WoW players have noticed this), I find I like my “structured” life in WoW, and look forward to returning there from this (sometime) shitty "real one’!

And no, I’m not addcited. If I were, you can bet I’d be higher than a level 11 Human warrior by now.

I just enjoy the quests, the music, and the fact that at any time of day or night, there’s someone else in Azeroth with me.

It’s really been good for what “ails” me!

And no, you’ve never steered me wrong, Oak!

Quasimodem, I know the mouse you’re talking about–in fact, I’m going to pick up my preorder today!

For a casual player (and particularly one at your level) that mouse would be overkill. It’s really only useful if you plan to set up a bunch of macros and/or keybindings (as is often done for raiding…don’t know about PvP since I never do it). The thing has about 16 different buttons on it and you can assign a macro to each button, as well as setting individual color and glow patterns for different profiles (such as for different characters).

I’m willing to bet that for a casual player who’s having fun leveling and questing, it’s just overkill. Especially for $100. I leveled three characters to 70 (and one to 80) so far using a regular two-button mouse with a scroll wheel, and never had a bit of trouble. But if you like gadgets and fiddling with lots of settings and macros, you might enjoy it.

I’m roaring through 73 right now and solo 95% of the time.

I often play at the same time as my best friend, my sister, etc., but we usually just solo and talk to each other in-game.

This is exactly what I mean when I say y’all have saved me money.

Let’s not tell Consumer Reports about us, okay?

Nothing like personal experience.

I admit it doesn’t work all the time, but when I read your “bitch and moan” posts about a particular product, it gets my attention.
