Wow. Could Prometheus look any MORE like Alien?

io9 has the first trailer up for Ridley Scott’s new one, ‘Prometheus’.

Good Lord, could it be any more clear that he made an Alien movie without the logo? I know it was sort of aimed that way before negotiations didn’t work out but WOW. I generally expect the serial numbers to be filed off a little more thoroughly than this.

Not that I’m complaining. There hasn’t been a decent Alien move (IMHO) since James Cameron’s Aliens. So having someone who really knows what he’s doing with it make on will be a pleasure (hopefully). But seriously, I am seeing something that’s not there?

For a sec there, it looked like they found the Guardian of Forever.

It says it’s a prequel to Alien.

Yep. It is/was intended as the prequel and I have been waiting forever for it. (Does it still feature the “space jockey” race, I wonder?)

And it looks awesome! The trailer doesn’t even pretend to do anything but show us how it’s going to look, and it looks freaking awesome!

It’s still explicitly Alien - it’s just less of a direct, immediately-before-the-events-of-Alien prequel than it was originally conceived as. We will still see the Space Jockeys, and the alien in this movie will be presented as a direct progenitor of the alien that terrorized the Nostromo.

There’s certainly no attempt to “file the serial numbers off” - it’s supposed to be as close to the Alien mythology as possible, just expanded a bit - that’s why he brought H.R. Giger in on it.

They seem to come in all shapes and sizes.

I just watched the trailer and realized the movie is not a depiction of the Greek myth. For my first post on SD, a little embarassing.

Heh. Your edit makes my reply seem out of left field.

No worries! And welcome!

It looks and feels great. I’m wondering if they’re exploring the idea of panspermia. Great to see Ridley finally back doing SciFi.

I won’t watch the teasers, the trailers, clips or anything because I want to see it unfold on the big screen, but June 8 can’t come quick enough. The Aliens world, Ridley Scott, Geiger? Oh bring it on. I’m also looking forward to that cast.

You can’t go wrong with Noomi Rapace. First billed doesn’t always mean anything on IMDB but if it does, damn, how exciting. She’s hardly unknown, but I hope this will make her a star in the same way Alien made Sigourney Weaver a star.
Charlize Theron is solid in everything she does.
Michael Fassbender is one of our finest actors.
Patrick Wilson (well, I could do without him, he drives me nuts. Hope he gets eaten early on. He is billed as “Cocooned man” which thrills me in a very unhealthy way)
Idris Elba is always awesome.
Guy Pearce is too.

But it’s Rapace and Fassbender for the win, above all others.

It likely will be if you squint a bit. Prometheus is literally the name of the ship, but the crew is in search of the origin of mankind and may bring back a destructive, consuming force and (in all probability) pay a gruesome price for it.

I too had thought Scott had completely abandoned the Alien prequel motif. I know he said he had at some point because I remember being severely disappointed upon reading that. I played the clip before reading the text below it, and though “Jesus titty-fucking Christ! That **IS **Alien! Those are primitive eggs, that IS a facehugger, that **IS **the Space Jockey set, that sure looks to be an LV427-like ship!” Then I read that he has changed his mind again, and apparently it is a sort-of prequel.

I think Scott is just trying to avoid the cheesiness that is always present with prequels, them becoming so frequent, and inevitably bad, these days. Would be nice to have a well made Alien film again. I liked Alien³ more than most, but it was majorly flawed. I just watched, well TiVo-skimmed, Alien 4 again, my god that has got to be one of the most godawful pieces of worthless shit ever made! And the first AvP wasn’t exactly great, but it was surprisingly not awful, pretty entertaining. AvP 2? Movie made by two effects guys who could not write a decent story or character or probably *sentence *if their lives depended on it!

Worst thing about the AvP franchise is that, before it started, Cameron was considering returning to the Alien films (YAY!!!) but AvP soured him on it. Maybe Ridley will bring respectability back to the franchise and he’ll reconsider!

Also forgot to mention, in the new clip you can most definitely hear the high-pitched ‘yell’ that was heavily featured in the original Alien ‘egg’ trailer!

Just watched the trailer, and my jaw dropped as I realised just how big a callback it was to the original Alien and the early promos for it. Amazing!

I really believe that the “Alien” brand has become associated with shitty films ever since Alien3 in 1992, and the issue here is one of branding: why saddle this new film with all the baggage of Alien3, Resurrection and the AvP films? There may be continuity issues as well–it no doubt pays no mind to anything established in the later films. That said, I hope it can coexist with Cameron’s Aliens, which was a legitimate sequel in my mind.

I will admit the I have never seen a single Alien movie. Never appealed to me for some reason. But after seeing some set pics and watching the trailer, I really want to see this movie. I think I’ll put off watching Alien, so I’ll have no frame of reference going in.

I think the reason it’s not an Alien film is because there’s no Xenomorph. Instead it appears to be exclusively about the Space Jockey.

Don’t let that stop you, man. If I had a nickel for every time I’ve screwed up here-hell I pulled off a real boneheaded manuever just last week. Anyhoo, welcome to the Dope.
