You weren’t around for the Horrific Event of a couple of years ago, Johnny, where there was (to the best of my recollection) a child molester who posted here, and TubaDiva outed his real life address on these boards or posted it somewhere using behind the scenes knowledge she had as an admin here - we lost any number of long-term posters over her actions and the lack of response from the management here to her actions. To say she was criticized is a vast understatement.
What you might be seeing at this point is the reactions of long-term posters to moderator actions that don’t even come close to comparing with what TubaDiva did back then. Which probably isn’t great, either; just because it’s not as bad doesn’t mean it’s good. Plus, there is a natural inclination to defer to authority. We are free to criticize mods and other posters in the ways that don’t break the rules of the Boards here, but you’re absolutely right that there are some tendencies to follow the herd here, too. Very few people like to be the guy trying to swim against the current and getting trashed for it.
ETA: You can be a burn-out, jock, or bad boy here as much as you like, if you can do it within the rules. I personally have no problem with kicking assholes out of here, if all they want to do is crap the place up for the rest of us.
You know, I’m not exactly sure what the OP is talking about, but I don’t think the “if you don’t like it here, you can just leave” is really disproving his point.
