Ok…this is a question only for those (I imagine few) 'dopers who actually play WoW, and who play in the PvP battlegrounds. Anyone else is not going to have a clue what I’m talking about most likely.
The question has to do with the big 40 on 40 BG called Alteric Valley, or AV for short…but it also concerns all of the battle grounds. I’ll also open the thread up for any OTHER questions or comments reguarding WoW PvP in the battlegrounds, if anyone wants to discuss them.
Anyway, here is the question…I’ve noticed an interesting thing in my many (!!) hours of PvP in the battlegrounds as I made my attempt to grind my way to rank 14 (I’ve since given up as there is a whole new PvP system coming soon). What I’ve noticed though is this…at least in the server cluster I’m part of, the Horde (I play Alliance) almost always wins in Arathi Basin (AB) and Warsong Gulch (WSG). In hundreds of games I’ve played, my current percentage is something like 28% wins in AB and 22% wins in WSG. However, the converse is true in AV…my percentage in nearly 100 games is 95% wins for the Alliance. Thats a pretty good sample size I think to indicate a serious trend both ways.
The question is…why? Why does the Horde dominate in WSG and AB, while losing so badly in AV? I’ve heard all kinds of theories…and I even have a few of my own…but I was wondering what folks here (if there are any WoW PvPers here) think.
to low to comment on AV but your AB is dead on the money. Horde (my team) dominates the hell out of that map. I dont play as much warsong but that one seems to be a bit more 50/50 to me. like I said I dont play much so thats a small sample size for you.
On my server, the alliance has perfected zerging to an art form. The funny thing is, if anything goes wrong with the charge…we lose. So either an AV is won by the alliance in like 45min or lost in like 3 hours.
The way I hear things is that the horde has more small unit experience because of earlier exposure to raiding with wailing caverns and the other low level instance near ogrimmar. My perception agrees that many people who tend to play horde seem to be better team players.
IMHO only a handful of horde mages I have seen on my cluster are good at PVP offensive AOE work, that can draw things out alot and make advancing under fire difficult.
Yeah, I’m exalted in AV as well…and revered in AB and WSG (NEVER going to get to exalted before the big patch).
Its just so strange that the Alliance can dominate the big game, while consistently losing in the two smaller games. As I said, I’ve played a LOT of BG PvP since it came out…and using Honorfu I can keep track of my wins/losses. I think my sample size is big enough to definitively say that, at least on my server cluster (I’m on Stormrage btw) the alliance loses much better than 50% of the time at AB and WSG, while winning in the 90% range at AV…and its just so strange that it works out that way.
Well, the lower level BG’s aren’t really the same as when you get to 60…those BG’s are brutal. I have several alts that I run through the lower level BG’s and I’m doing marginally better in AB and WSG at the lower levels…maybe 39% in AB and 30% in WSG on most of my alts (much smaller sample size of course).
One perhaps significant reason: Alliance tends to have more raiding experience than Horde, and AV is, more than anything else, a raid instance. Sure, there’s PVP involved, but you can’t really look at it as a straight PVP game. On most servers, Alliance has progressed further than Horde through MC/BWL/AQ/Naxx, etc., so they have the better gear and the better teamwork for large fights of that nature.
That, and I’m not sure many Horde actually try to win in AV. It seems like it’s just a given that Horde will lose, so they just go for the rep and to fish.
Yeah…I’ve heard this explaination before…but I never understood it. First off…WHY does the Alliance have more raid experience? Because of higher population? Secondly…is it even true? I mean, when I’m playing in the various BG’s, seems to me ALL the horde toons have uber gear (which I DON’T have, having no patience with raiding. My gear is all PvP officer stuff) Lastly, even if its true that you need raid type experience to take down the named mobs guarding the towers and such, and of course to take down the big guy at the end, it seems to me the Horde rarely GET there. Usually I play defense these days (since offense is unlikely to get you many HK’s, and its usally pretty boring IMHO :))…and its a rare game when the Horde actually get to our final stronghold. Usually they don’t even get to the outer grave yard or across the bridge to be honest…and end up endlessly fighting back and forth along the mountain road, despite the fact that they normally have the Alliance heavily outnumbered (since most of our guys are on the offensive hammering THEIR final keep, taking THEIR relief hut and wacking Drek).
Yeah…the converse is true for the Alliance in AB and WSG. This seems to be the efect though, not the cause. I just wonder WHY its the case.
One thing I’ve been thinking about lately is…could it be the board design in AV? Maybe the Horde have some kind of handicap because of how the bases are situated, how the graveyards are positioned, and how the final defenses are formed? One thing I’ve noticed is that the bridge leading into the Alliance stronghold is much more difficult to cross than the small fortified town with fortress and flanking towers that the Horde has…though of course, their relief hut is much more defensible than the Alliance’s is, if you get that far.
BTW, anyone checked out the new Eye of the Storm BG in the expansion? It looks totally insane…and I’m already dreading it. It seems to be a combination of resource capture (like in AB) and capture the flag (like in WSG), and its a small game again (15 players IIRC)…so, its all the things the Horde does well and kicks our asses at constantly! Going to be yet another game where Alliance gets our asses constantly handed to us, at least from the looks of it.
Here is a link if anyone hasn’t seen it but is intersted in checking it out. I don’t have a beta account, so haven’t tried it yet myself (I don’t think its in the beta yet in any case, but not sure).
