Wristwatches

So - I’ve got the itch - but … every damn watch I like is hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars - more than I want to spend.

Help me understand what I get at different price points and help me find something in the hundred dollar range that isn’t junk.

I don’t want digital - I don’t want the watch face to be too busy - dual time zones would be nice - leather (or even canvas) band over metal (have yet to ever find one that I could make fit right).

How about this Casio analog digital watch? If you don’t like the strap you can always get that separately.

I’ve always worn watches. I have an Oakley Timebomb (which sadly, appears to be dying) as my “daily wearer”. I also have a bunch of Swatches from a brief period I spent running a Swatch store. I really need to get those batteries replaced. Finally, I’ve got an uber-expensive Bucherer chronograph tucked away in a drawer that needs serious repair work. If anyone has any ideas about that, let me know.

too bright - but close - led me to this skagen - which, admitedly doesnt have dual times…

Nice. It’s slender, not bulky too. Sharp looking.
A related topic is that I like to sync my watch every few months to the US Naval Observatory’s Master Clock. That link gives UTC and the USA time zones, and there’s more info on the USNO home page. I like my watch to be accurate to within a second or two.

I’ve been up and down about watches. For the longest, I got by with a Rolex Submariner No-Date for everything. I went on a mini-spree with Oris watches for a spell after noticing one in Constantine. Currently, I wear a Seiko automatic daily but, being a gearhead, I’ve got a small collection of watches associated with cars I’ve owned. When I had my 80s Porsches, I bought one of those black titanium Porsche Design watches. When I sold the cars and bought a 3-series and Z4, the dealer threw in BMW’s Z4 watch; since then I’ve added a watch whenever I changed cars if I don’t already have one (I drive a Boxster now, for instance, so the old PD is fine.

The odd thing: I’ve got three Honda motorcycles and there are no watches affiliated with any of the models, even the CBR600RR.

That’s not odd. That’s the normal part.

Marketing missing a niche, no matter how tiny and obscure? That’s not normal.

I’ve had the Burberry for about a year now. No tales to tell. It’s been reliable. It’s the ceramic with a ceramic bracelet so it stands up well to scratching. Better than stainless. It’s not in the same league as say a Rolex or Omega or even my Tag, but I find it beautiful and enjoy the look and feel of it on my wrist. Perfect accessory for a suit. Oh, and it keeps time! It’s my favourite of all my watches right now.

The Timex is just a watch I wear when I wash the car or run errands in the summer. It’s an accessory rather than a time piece. Reliable so far. Sturdy enough for what it is. I won’t feel bad if I happen to damage it accidentally. Cheap and easy to replace. A no-brainer for the kind of stuff you have in mind for it.

I have been wearing a Seiko Sports 150 Blackface dive watch that I bought in the carribean now for 30 yrs. Paid $300 for it in 1984. It still is very accurate but is pretty scratched up from all that use.

I misread your post. I thought you were just saying you didn’t own any of them. Anyway, there was this, but it looks like it’s been discontinued.

I’ve never been interested in any of the big-name brands-- They all have moving parts that are much too big and clunky for my tastes. I prefer a watch that can run for 10 years with no maintenance whatsoever, and survive constant wear even in the shower or swimming, while not losing more than a couple of minutes in that whole span of time. It’s really kind of amazing that such products are actually available.

And even more amazing that they only cost ten or fifteen bucks.

I was expecting something a little more from a user name like Chronos on the subject of watches. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m about to pull the trigger on this one - for 70$ on fleabay…

Are skagens worth it?

It’s a nice looking watch. For $70, how can you possibly go wrong?

They’re not, like, marvels of engineering or anything, but they’re nice to look at and well-made. And for what it’s worth I love their mesh bands like the one you linked.

My coworker wears a Skagen and he absolutely loves it. I prefer a more traditional band for myself but I think it looks fine on other wrists.

Find a watch you like then get one of these.

I wear an Invicta 8928 Pro Diver every day. I do not take it off unless I need to get my wrist through a small space. It’s on my wrist in bed, in the shower, at work, at play, swimming, diving and driving.

It might gain a minute or so a month, but that’s easily changed with the dial on the side, and a fair trade off for it’s $90 or so price. From anything more than 4 ft away, it looks like a Rolex.

Highly recommended, and in 5+ years when I finally break it somehow, I’ll get another. (My previous one lasted about 5 years, before I forgot to screw the knob down fully and some water leaked in, fogging the glass)

I’d love to get into high price watches, but I don’t want to have to worry about damaging one. This give me the look of a high end watch, the function of one, but the confidence that it can be replaced in my budget.
