WTF? Drivers don't work for my new video card!

I just bought a new video card for my comp (still fooling around with my comp, for those of you who have been following the saga), and the drivers don’t work!

I live in Korea, and the card is a Korean-made Nvidia Geforce II MX… is there any reason why English drivers wouldn’t work with a Korean made card? I tried the drivers that came with the card… no go. I tried downloading the drivers from Nvidia’s website… no go.

Anyone have any ideas? I may have to haul my comp down to the store where I bought the card to see if they can do it… major pain in the ass!

BTW: I do know what I am doing more or less… have installed modems, LAN cards, sound cards, other video cards, etc. in this comp and in other comps many times before (usually with no problems!)…

Is there an onboard video card? If there is you might have to disable it to make the new card work.

Nope… no on-board video card… starting to think either there’s something wrong with the motherboard or else the BIOS is set up wrong (and that is over my head!)…

Does the video card not work at all or is it stuck at 640x480 16 colors? If it doesnt work at all it might be defective.

The video card has to have an interupt (IRQ) all to it’s self. You need the latest drivers for the AGP chip set on the motherboard, if it’s a Via chip set. Finally, if you can’t work the bios setup, have someone else put in the video card. You need to set many things in the bios correct.

Nah, video cards don’t usually use any IRQs. There is probably a video BIOS on the card itself, which if it is Korean might not work with the English drivers. If you could reflash that with an English BIOS, it might work. Does the card work at all? Can you get standard VGA out of it? If not the card might not be any good to begin with.

I own this card (same Nvidia chipset at least) and on my Elsa Erazor the earlier driver sets (Erazor specific) seem to work better (for DVD playback at least) than the latest ones.

I would think the Korean card should work with the latest Nvidia reference drivers. Per your suspicion I would also suspect you have an AGP mode BIOS setup issue or that the card is defective.

Sometimes the previous video card can leave behind a few video driver and utility programs that clutter up memory. Make sure none of the old drivers and old utility programs for the previous card are being loaded into memory.

I’ve seen a few video cards that do require IRQs. I think it’s a possibility, if your old card didn’t require it but the new card does.

I rather think astro might be right. Can you boot up Windows in safe mode, at 640x480 resolution? If so, go to device manager and remove all the video cards and all the “unknown” devices. Then follow the instructions from the beginning. (Which probably involves rebooting, letting Windows auto-detect the new card and telling it to get the driver from the CD-ROM)

Thanks all! Finally got fed up and hauled the comp to the store that sold me the card (former student… nice guy!). I am avenged!!! The card was defective! I am not a moron! Yay!!!

Now working just fine, kick ass graphics! Happy!!!

Now go to systems, display, properties, resources. You will see an IRQ. The new ones get fussy, about sharing interupts. You won’t find a Geforce II card that doesn’t use an interupt.

Glad you got the problem fixed.

just an FYI – Geforce cards are tempermental with AMD systems – often see problems with that combo
