I wanted to ask this in GQ, but the fact is that this has pissed me off so much that I must rant. Since when has religion become such a fucking fashion accessory? I can understand the media have intensely popularised certain religions, and that our impressionable youth jump on the band wagon at every turn. I have no problem with people choosing to follow a religion but why the fuck do you have advertise it with these fuckingly blatent corporate identity tags.
If you wear a cross, you demonstrate yourself to be a Christian, fair enough. But when you put on a bracelet asking “What would Jesus do?” I just want to scream in your face, “Well he fucking wouldn’t want you buying crap like that.” All around my school there are all of these kids wearing the same fucking bands around their wrists like it makes them a fucking better Christian. Huh? Do you need to be reminded to follow the teachings of your Messiah every five fucking minutes? Religion is already a fucking tool to rule people in a quasi-dictatorship, you don’t have to add fashion to this screwed up equation too. Jesus didn’t want you to look good hon. Get it into your head and off of your wrist, mmmmmkay?
Actually, I think the term you’re looking for is “Opiate of the Masses” although in some parts of the world it is becoming the “Methamphetamine of the Masses.”
Actually, those big blatant Christian t-shirts and flashy accessories always make me cringe. Same with the smug bumper stickers, excessive house decorations and so forth. They just make me cringe.
There are many reasons for this feeling. Certainly, there’s a feeling of “too much, too much.” There are passages in the Bible about not being too flashy and “showy” about your faith, like you’re showing off how pios you are. (I’m too lazy to look up the scriptures.) I just don’t like it.
I’m not doubting the sincerity of some of the people who wear these t-shirts and decorate their whole house up like some weird Vegas-Elvis-Christian shrine—all I know is that it gives me the heebie-jeebies and I’m sure not going to do it.
Why is it any of the OP’s busines if somebody wears a WWJD bracelet? I can see pointing it out if the werer is contradicting the bracelet’s snetiment by acting like a jerk–I enjoy anti-Christian hypocrisy snark as much as the next guy–but come on!
HTF does someone’s unobtrusive Jesus bracelet harm you? If atheists ask for tolerance, then we should also grant tolerance to Christians in return. People have a right to believe whatever foolishness they like so long as it doesn’t harm anyone else.
Live and let live–it’s more than just a good idea.
What would Jesus did? That’s old hat. Now what would Brian Boitano do? That’s a head scratcher.
Seriously, dude. Mello out. Jesus did pretty cool stuff. If everyone truly followed his lead there would a lot less bullcrap in the world, except for people tearing up temples every five minutes. The next time someone wearing one of those bracelets lies or slanders or does something like that point out the discepany between the teaching of Jesus and their actions. Or tell them to take a long walk on a short pier. Whichever.
Did something happen to provoke this rant? Just out of curiousity.
I saw a cute tract once where this guy is standing before the entrance to Heaven and he points to his car, which has a Jesus bumper sticker on it.
A voice from above says “Well, your car can come in…”
I guess its sortof like Those who live it, don’t have to advertise it.
But I see not much different with that than wearing a shirt with your favorite rock band on it.
