X-Men 3 (spoilers)

There’s that one scene where they’re getting ready to leave the school and everybody’s walking into the jet hangar that ends with Wolverine walking away from the camera. My roommate–who usually frowns upon any speech at all during movie-theater outings–leaned over to me and said “God bless dancers in leather pants.”

The end of the credits. Moira McTaggert is in the room with the brain-dead guy, who opens his eyes and says her name (in X’s voice).

Based on what we saw in the movie, it could be interpreted either way. We don’t see any mutant effects getting close to him without the mutant in question also getting close. The Leech character isn’t from the comics, is he?

Plotwise, they could have dealt with Wolverine’s pants by just framing the shots so that we only see him from the waist up. If they wanted the fanservice, they could have just shot the pantsless scenes from the rear: Plenty of movies have shown male buttocks with only a PG-13, or even PG, rating. While I personally don’t have any vested interest in seeing Hugh Jackman naked, I think either of those would have made more sense than (apparently) adamantium pants.

And I have no objection to fanservice. We of the female-preferring variety got to see Rebecca Romjin naked; it’s only fair that the male-preferring variety get to see Jackman naked.

Yep, he is. I think in his case he can be affected by powers, as long as they’re used from a distance (for example, a blast from Cyclops would kill him).

Yep, it does. If Wolverine had carried the dart with him, it would have shredded just like his clothes and flesh. Only his adamantium-laced boxers survive.

That’s not clear to me. If he’d held it in a closed fist, it seems like it would have been safe.

You remember that classroom scene from the beginning, where Professor X is posing his students a hypothetical about the ethics of moving a dying man’s consciousness into a braindead body? During the lecture, he’s got a video link to a woman named Moira MacTaggart, who has just such a vegetable under her care. At the very end of the movie, after the credits roll, there’s a brief scene of Dr. MacTaggart tending to the brain dead body, which suddenly addresses her by name in Professor X’s voice.

Or if he’d just held it in front of his crotch, which apparently was emiting some sort of “anti-disintegration” field that was protecting his pants.

Perhaps Wolverine was using sheer willpower to stop his crotch and surrounding area from being disintegrated.

If I recall correctly, he has his fists clenched in that scene anyway (acting!). But the material from his gloves is totally destroyed. Plus, if he holds it in his closed fist there’s a good chance he’d inject himself by accident, and if Wolverine’s down they really have little hope left.

I am going from memory on this, so I could easily be wrong.

Nope you got it right. The idea of wolvie walking up with a cure dart closed hand or not is just silly.

Plus, the only reason why you’re able to “protect” something in a closed fist is because of the flesh around your finger bones. Sure, Wolverine has adamantium-wrapped bones, but the instant anything within it is exposed from stripped flesh (before it has time to regenerate), it’s vulnerable.

Yeah, but his hands were never completely skeletonized while he was walking up to Jean. They kept regrowing flesh as fast as she stripped it off of him. A dart held in a closed fist would never have been exposed to her powers. There is a slight danger of him accidentally sticking himself, but it seems to me that it’d be a risk worth taking if the only other option was gutting the woman I loved.

My thoughts exactly. He could certainly have carried “the cure” in his boxers. Hell, he could have carried it up his ass, and Jean would have been none-the-wiser!

… whatever the case, I think it’s a damned shame, about the pants.

wistful sigh
