xkcd thread

Such was my take too. Nor am I sure it’s incorrect for a lot of folks.

Blackhat’s last line really stings in the context of AGW.

As a kid I always thought I’d been born too soon; the future was so incredibly awesome and I was only going to see it up to the mid 21st century at best. Nowadays I shake my head and wonder if I was born too late.

I expect to make it to mid-century or thereabouts; I’m not too worried about me. But because I got a late start on parenthood, my son is >50 years younger than me, and will live to experience the consequences if we fail to sufficiently address AGW during this decade. That’s what scares me.

Yeah, 2050 is about my latest sell-by date too.

But if you think that in 2050 society, business, politics and finance will still be blissfully unaware that the light at the end of the tunnel is about to meet us head-on trapped in the tunnel at speed I’ll be happy to sell you some long-dated options.

Oh no, it’ll be dreadfully real by then if we don’t do what we need to do now. It’s just: how much is it going to directly affect the daily life of someone who’s in his 80s and 90s during the 2040s?

Depends on how badly your portfolio has been cratered by political unrest and fear and loathing, while Social Security has been gutted to pay for accommodation & remediation efforts along the coasts.

Heck, by 2050 large swaths of urban/suburban Florida may look more like East St. Louis as everyone recognizes their condo is unsaleable at any price and simply abandons them. It’d suck to have settled into a local Old Farts Home® a few years previously down there only to be told at age 85 when you’re feeble of both mind and body that the home is shutting down and the nearest alternative is 3 states away and already full of other elderly refugees.

My portfolio will be in T-bills well before then. And anyone our age who still considers retiring to Florida or Arizona would have to be pretty oblivious to what’s coming.

I’m 62. I live on the beach in FL right now. When should I sell & move? To where? I’m being flip here, but it’s legitimately a tough call.

I’m seeing T-bills yielding zero real interest rates by then. Assuming extremists don’t crater the Federal government first.

Quite frankly, I find this hijack quite tiring, especially that I chimed in to basically agree with you. Are you just looking for stuff to argue about? Go argue with yourself. I’ve had enough.

I’m sorry you thought I was arguing. That wasn’t my intent. I’ve done a poor job here and I’m sorry if I’ve annoyed you.

We’re both in agreement it’s gonna be a mess and hard to navigate. On several levels.

Not that it would make it funnier, but Perseverance should be a notch or two higher than Curiosity.

“Will I be able to play piano?”

“Yes.”

“Sweet, I wasn’t able to play it before!”

Pediatrician here. This is really not far off from some of our phone calls!

This feels like a rehash of the joke from Life Before the Pandemic.

I suspect that even the math nerds are not going to find this especially funny.

That’s just mean.

So that’s the mode this is going to be in.
