Yahoo hijacked Chrome "New Tab" page

Sorry if this has been covered before, I tried searching but apparently used the wrong words.

Anyone know how I can reset my New Tab page so it’s not Yahoo? I tried googling around, but couldn’t find an answer that worked; all the discussion threads I find on the subject were all noise no signal.

Thanks in advance.

Google search on this: How to change default tab page in Chrome

Did that of course. Followed instructions. Did not work; still defaults to Yahoo.

I came here after exhausting the Google route, hoping for some specific answers from someone who’s dealt with this specific issue. “Just google it” isn’t much help.

What is the value of Settings->Search

Here is a link on disabling extensions.

Looks like it was disguised as something called “New Tab Assistant.”

Why does Yahoo think this kind of spammy behavior will win them customers? Sheesh.

Well, because its Yahoo. If you dig around you may find a way for Chrome to either prohibit that kind of hijacking behavior or at least notify you.

New Tab Assistant isn’t a Yahoo product. It comes from a company called Spigot, which is a notorious source of the sneaky toolbars and similar junk that is often bundled into freeware installations.

Thanks erysichthon. Seems the more freeware one uses, the more one pays…

In Settings>On Startup there is an item ‘Open a specific page or set of pages.’. Click the Set Pages link. You will be shown a box with a list of all pages to be opened when Chrome starts. Keep the first one, if you want (This is the URL you want to see when you start) and erase any others show. The Yahoo one will probably be shown as the second one.

Thanks Bob. From erysichthon’s explanation, sounds like it was an extension. OR, does the extension modify your Set Pages link? (Sounds like it does.)
