Yeah, the Yankees really showed they were made of tough stuff despite the acquisitions of pernnial all-stars Sheffield and Rodriguez. Will they be able to continue toughing it out after getting Beltran and Pedro and Radke? It’s hard to believe, but the never-say-die Yankees have always proved the critics wrong.
Sauron, I hate that as much as anyone and would love to shove a brick down his mouth everytime he says it.
BobLibDem, I feel as if it is more than a couple of holes. Steinbrenner built an aging team. We need youth. We need to start grooming Mariano’s successor, who will be needed in 2-4 years. We need starting pitching. We need left-handed relief. We need a first baseman and a center fielder.
Steinbrenner might go out and buy proven players, but they’re expensive (not that it really seems to matter to him) and they’re OLD. This team needs some youth. The World Series Yankees won with KIDS like Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettite, Bernie Williams, Jorge Posada. But the years have taken their toll on all of them, and our minor leagues don’t seem to have any replacements available.
skurtir, I’d love to see Beltran. Pedro’s best years are behind him, but that’s never stopped George (coughKevin Browncough).
I would argue the Yankees need a second baseman more than a first baseman. Imagine the ALCS with a healthy Jason Giambi. Cairo is a journeyman and competent, but we could use a better man here. Bernie Williams is starting to age, time to get a replacement. Leftfield, rightfield, third, and short are in solid hands for several more years. Posada didn’t contribute much in the ALCS either, it might be time to consider his fate. But reliable starting pitching is the biggest need.
I just finished a conversation with a friend about Giambi. I think Giambi has seen his best years already. Giambi really would not have made that much of a difference during the regular season…winning 100 games is hard enough as is. The question is how he could have contributed in the post-season. My friend agreed with you, that a healthy Giambi will be a true difference-maker.
Posada is a question-mark. Obviously, the season took its toll on him. He’s not known for being the man to get a big hit. I give left and right fields 3 years before we need to replace…center field we should replace immediately.
We need a number 2 or 3 starter. Give Vasquez one more year as no. 4 to see if he can handle NY.
Cairo had an admirable year. He did what was expected and required of him. He earned a shot at next year’s starting job.
Did you notice that the first part of your SN is misspelled with an extra “L”? You should e-mail the mods to get them to fix that for you.
Sorry man, but now you have a little taste of what being a Sox fan is like. This understanding will no doubt lead to rapprochment between Yankees and Red Sox fans.
Yeah, I know…the station will always be radically baseball-centric. At least they won’t be wasting as much football-discussion time on hockey this year.
Sacrilege. Come February through April, there will be a huge sports void. At least this year, I will be much better informed come football draft and baseball preseason.

Being a Yankee fan I would like to defend my team. They didn’t choke. I wouldn’t call games that went to 12 and 14 innings “choking” these teams fought like hell for the win. Boston had better pitching and that’s what this series came down to. I have been a Yankee fan forever and that has always been my complaint about them. Steinbrenner has owned a baseball team for a million years and still hasn’t figured out that there is more to the game than big bats. Hopefully this ALCS will drive it home for him.
It’s good that Boston won because they deserved it. But, don’t get too smug - that curse ain’t reversed unless you win the Series
