It’s only been bothering me for a few YEARS now. I hate it that Word defaults to Calibri 11pt as the default font for documents. I prefer the more traditional Times New Roman 12pt and I always had to change it every time I opened a new document. In my version of Word (2007, I believe) there is no options menu that I’ve found anywhere so I was at a loss as to how to set the default.
Just now I decided to look again and I found the little triangular pop-out sign in the corner of the “Font” box. I clicked it. It was set to “+Body” and 11pt… I saw a button labeled “Default” at the bottom so I took a risk and changed “+Body” to “Times New Roman” and changed the size to 12 and hit “Default.” It warned me that I was about to change the default, and did I want to. Clicked yes or ok or whatever, and then I exited out of Word. I opened it back up and sure enough, the document was set for TNR 12pt. Hooray!
I remember Googling about this several years ago and not finding any instructions, but maybe it was too new at the time. This time I would have Googled if I didn’t figure it out on my own, but fortunately I was able to. Anyway, it made me inordinately happy as it’s been bothering me for so long. I decided to share in case anyone else was similarly bothered and wanted to know how to do it.
In the spirit of discussion, have you figured out how to do something recently that made you happy?
My youngest was visiting from Seattle this summer. Thanks to him, I now know that the “Next” button on the DVD remote works much better for skipping scenes than using the Fast Forward button.
Also thanks to him, I’m using the More Dry/Less Dry option on my clothes dryer. Much more efficient than setting the timer.
My daughter taught me that you can turn the key twice in the car door to unlock all the doors. Also that there’s a little arrow on the gas gauge that tells you which side your gas tank’s on.
It’s kind of embarrassing that it took me this long to learn about it, since I’ve been posting at this board for 8 years and reading for even longer, but someone recently showed me this trick where, if you go to a user’s profile and click the “User Lists” button right below their main profile info, there is a menu that pops up, and you can click “Add to Ignore List” and you will no longer see posts from that person. It completely changes your board experience.
Shows how crappy and old the computers we have at work are…I didn’t even know that TNR stopped being the default font for Word. I think we have Office 2002 there, and still use WinXP.
One of the early versions of Word for Mac, say around 1996, displayed the following error message when the application could not find the template file named Normal:
If normal did not exist, could Word locate it? Who defines normal? The philosophical implications of this error message could be debated for years. It’s even more profound than “PC Load Letter.”
