ok, here’s another medical OP. That I hope won’t get closed, as I’m not exactly asking for medical advise (and because I AM UNDER A DOCTORS CARE).
The whites of my eyes aren’t. They’re a bit yellow. Now, I’d be freaking out and thinking I had heptitis, were it not for the fact that I just had blood work done for my liver that says I don’t.
But I have “elevated liver fuction”. He said don’t drink. Good idea. But is there anything else I can do? Vitamins? That sort of thing. Yello clashes with my wardrobe.
I had Hep B in 1976 (I test negative for it now). The yellow eyes were kind of cool, the Coca-Cola colored urine was odd, but the white stools were really weird.
“Elevated liver function” sounds sort of like hepatitis. Maybe your doctor decided you didn’t have infectious hepatitis because you didn’t test positive for Hep A, B, or C. You could still have alcoholic or fatty liver hepatitis.
Or maybe just your bilirubin was elevated with a normal ALT and AST (which measures the degree of liver inflammation, which is what hepatitis really is, anyway). In which case you wouldn’t have hepatitis, but may have Gilbert’s syndrome, with a transient bilirubin elevation.
But you really should have your doctor explaining this stuff to you.
Is this a recent phenomenon, and is the yellow evenly distributed or in a band across the eyeball?
The reason I ask is that I went to school with a guy who had a yellow-tinged stripe across both eyes, which was apparently due to some minor deflect with his blinking - he didn’t shut his eyelids completely and as a result the surface of his eyes was a little abnormal, but only trivially.
No idea if this was a sensible explanation or merely a cover for him being part goat or alien.
yes, I think it is. But he’s not the most helpful. I inherited him from me mom. She seems to think he knows what he’s about. But when I had breathing problems he just listened to my lungs and said they were fine…wasn’t till I went to an allergist , took him five minutes to say it was my sinuses and give me the right perscription.
I know I should be talking to a doctor (maybe a better one) but talking here gives me some idea of what to talk to him about. Comes in handy.
Thanks. As I said, this is the kind of information I need to talk to him about. Or to a better doctor. Gilberts syndrom! Who is this Gilber and what’s he doing in my liver???
Thanks again. This is the sort of information I need to take to my doctor.
I have to say, I understand the thought behind not having medical information on the SDMB. But it can be helpful. Your doctor might not know everything. As long as we know it’s not a real diagnoisis i think it’s helpful.
