It’s certainly evocative, and the gist is clear, but I have this feeling that the word denotes so much more than just “hopeless loser who’s driving us freaking nuts”.

I’d say a troll is someone who intentionally and ENDLESSLY posts pointless, convoluted, annoying, antagonistic, and/or impossible to decipher psychotic ramblings, generally designed to pad post count and infuriate the Gods (as well as the rest of us mortals). They often whine about nobody liking them, they call nasty names, fling innuendo (or outright lies) around like fairy dust, don’t seem to understand that they’re universally vilified, and cheerfully go through life ignoring any point of argument that they’re unable to understand or answer. Mostly, I suppose it’s a pathetic attempt to get attention.

Disputin, thanks for the explanation on troll-ness (trollitude?). And for the example of the Hillary thread. I read about two pages of it, and had to go for my smelling salts, the random stupidity level was so high. Trolls never seem to really answer questions, either. And then claim that censorship is being attempted upon them as a defense, when people call them on it.

You’re incorrect as to the age and sex of all the posters. We have some people here who are not old enough to vote. We have both genders and a wide variety of sexual preferences represented. Lots of political positions, too. Just what do you consider an “advanced age”, by the way? 80? 25?
Yeah, the Pit is for name-calling, flaming, and just plain venting, but even here there are limits.
And may I offer a suggestion? Don’t assume that you know what my job entails. I have NOTHING to do with the technical side of the SDMB, other than editing posts. When the board went down, my job was limited to receiving questions from our members asking when the board would be back up, and mostly saying “I have no idea.” Even if I were able to secure the site, I couldn’t, because I don’t live near the server.
