Depends on the storm’s track. Storms that stay near the shoreline give us the most snow but if it strays west we won’t get as much. I haven’t heard any official prediction for the amount but unoffcial word for Metro DC puts it at 5-8".
I’m with JuanitaTech on this one; I’ll believe it when I see it. We haven’t had a decent snowfall in several years so I’m looking forward to it. I’m also predicting we get little more than a dusting here. As an expatriated Pennsylvanian, I think they get crazy here over a few inches too.
I for one hope it snows a lot, because this is the last year I’m going to be here to deal with it. I asked my language teacher about weather in Sri Lanka, and there isn’t even a word for snow in Tamil. Apparently the coldest it gets there is 60F.
Of course, I have to drive in it tomorrow unless the federal government gets shut down, so it’s a mixed blessing.
I’m ready for snow. We’ve got bread, milk, and TP enough to last us a lot longer than this storm will be a problem, and I’m looking forward to an excuse to stay home from work - and if I’m lucky, I may not even have to burn a day of leave.
Here’s the Weather Underground radar map, which is all color-coded and stuff. This puppy’s headed right in our direction.
According to weather.com, we’re sposed to have a 60% chance of snow tomorrow. Fortunately, I’m in Texas till Monday, and while it’s a bit chilly here, it’s not snowing.
It’s crossed the river into southern Maryland, but it may be midnight or later before it gets up to you and Steve (aka FairyChatDad) and Juanita and Vorpal, BiblioCat. Be patient here.
As long as you put 'em on backwards and inside out. My kids wore their jammies inside out and backwards to bed tonight, because that makes it snow.
All hail the Snow Day.
Like another poster said, We aren’t worried, We’re excited!
But the reason that the city gets almost shut down isn’t because of the heavy (haha) snow fall. It’s because Marylanders and Virginians can’t drive under the influance of water. Rain, Snow, Drizzle. It doesn’t matter. These people scare the hell outta me.
Well, okay, I have to admit, even though I hate winter, this idea of snow is strangely pleasing. We really haven’t had a good one in this area for awhile, so this could be fun.
I went grocery shopping today, the Christmas decorations are up, most of my shopping is done, the laundry’s washed and dried, and I’m pretty much all ready for guests this weekend.
If the weather’s messy tomorrow morning, I’ll work from home. (And hopefully not get distracted by presence of boyfriend…)
Therefore, for my amusement… bring me some snow, forsooth!
It started snowing at 1:30. I was driving from Annapolis into DC at the time. By the time I got to the Pentagon, it was really coming down. There was about a 1/2" on the sidewalks.
The roads are melting where they’ve spread the chemicals - but they haven’t treated all of the lanes. I hope they get the rest before morning rush hour.
If you go to our homepage, you can click on the “winter weather update” to see what we’re expecting. I’ll be updating it later this morning. Right now I’m thinking about increasing the amounts a little. Maybe 3-4" before 8:00 for a total of 5 to 8". Also, it might last a couple hours longer.
My wife doesn’t believe we’ll get any more than flurries and plans to leave for work at her regular time. She says the forecasters are always wrong and hype the snow events too much.
[Rodney]No Respect, I tell ya! I get no respect at all.[/Rodney]
1.5 inches here in Arlington (one block from the Pentagram), and I won’t be going to work today. Seems they haven’t plowed and my language teacher can’t get in. Oh, darn. How vexatious. Now I’ll have to stay home and study with some single-malt scotch.
I’ve got a couple inches at most on the back deck, darnitall, and (quite sensibly) the government is open. But the weather map (see my earlier link) shows a lot of frozen precip still to the south of us, so my wife and I are waiting until after morning rush hour.
Especially because we’re running on old tires - I ordered new ones last week, and scheduled an appointment to have them put on. The appointment is for tomorrow. I’ll feel a lot more comfortable driving around in sleet and slush once I’ve got good rubber on my wheels again.
Apparently the stuff to the south of us on the radar really means something; they’re talking about snow continuing through the morning and early afternoon, total accumulation 6-10 inches in the DC area at the rate of 1/2 inch per hour. Out here on the shores of the Chesapeake, they’re expecting a max of six inches, with more sleet and stuff.
Here’s a list of closings for the greater DC area. It says the Federal government’s open, but on unscheduled-leave policy. The OPM website, which says it gets updated immediately with closure policy changes, still says nothing about it. Schools, including most colleges are closed throughout the greater DC area.
Just got a call from my snow-bound husband. He can’t get out of the boat - the snow is drifted against the pilot house door and still coming down. Luckily, he has food, water, electricity, TV, and cable internet. He’s also got a cat who’s demanding attention. And he’s got reservations to come home tomorrow night, so this mess better clear up so I can have my sweetie for the weekend!!
