Yo, New Yorkers!

Oh, Cap’n, darling, of course you’re welcome–Ike and Melanie (I think) live in Brooklyn, and I live in New Jersey (though I am moving to Westchester).

But we’re still “New Yorkers,” we spend more than half our lives in the city.

Arrgh!

Why couldn’t you guys have planned this for LAST weekend, while I was in town? I won’t be back again until next April. (Any of you people go to I-Con at SUNY Stony Brook?)

Laugh hard; it’s a long way to the bank.

WHAT was “I-Con?” A convention for egotists?

Cute little clique you’ve got here.

Rest assured that I will be watching this thread . When the date for your conspiritorial little bash is announced, I’ll crash it.

I’ll reduce this cabal to a group of tour guides. I’ll want to see everything. The Rockettes, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the bums in the Bowery. All of it.

Getting me drunk and putting me on the bus won’t work. I’ve finally wised up to that dodge.

See you then! Be sure to wear blazers.

I-Con is an annual science fiction convention at SUNY in Stoney Brook.

So what’s the deal? We doin’ this thing tonight, or what?

Gotta fly to Vegas tomorrow, so if not today, next week is the next available time for me.

Yeah, tonight! I am all set to load up. Let’s just make a time and I’m sure others (Flora, Uke, Alpha) will show up. New Yorkers are always reliable when it comes to drinking.

What time, say 6:00? Russian Vodka Room?

Russian Vodka Room. 52nd between Broadway and Seventh. Tonight, 6 PM.

Be there, or be an Angeleno.

Uke

Done and Done.

Hm. Maybe it’s between Broadway and 8th Ave on 52nd street. My memory is getting fuzzy. I would recommend walking down 52nd street between 8th and 7th aves. It’s on the north side of the street, across from Russian Samovar and a few doors down from Roseland (there’s another one you must miss, Satan).

Really, anyone who happens to be in New York tonight is invited.

How are we going to find each other? Can someone put up a little sign that says, “DOPE!”?

OK, I’ll be there–I’ll only be able to stay for an hour or so, which will give everyone the chance to dish me to DEATH when I leave. Maybe I’ll meet Ike at his office so we can stroll in like Nick & Nora.

Are we going to use Real Names or Board Names? And how will we know each other?

Green carnations! Let’s all wear green carnations!

[a Real New Yorker, Uke whisks his copy of Zagat’s down from the shelf]

Okay…the Russian Samovar is at 256 West 52nd, between B’way and EIGHTH. And we’re meeting at the Russian Vodka Room, directly across the street, north side.

Nifty block, BTW…home of Gallagher’s and Victor’s Cuban, two of my favorite joints.

As Uke says, Russian Vodka Room is on 52nd, between 8th and Broadway.
The phone number is 307-5835

Here’s what Citysearch has to say about them.

When they open (2:00, IIRC), I’ll call them and try to reserve a table for “Straight Dope.”

I prefer real names, but I’m flexible.

Hey, ya’ll have fun and watch out for that hangover tomorrow. I think we have a date picked for the Ohio Hayseed Chapter now.

God! I miss NY!! I certainly would have joined you had I been in the neighborhood… It really sounds like this is gonna be a hoot. We outsiders will expect nothing less than a blow-by-blow description in the next few days. First item in the order of business should be the designation of a rapporteur :D.

All the best to you. Have a little thought for the enviers left back home.

I work in Long Island City, and I bike to work, so getting over the QB bridge shouldn’t be a big deal.

But if you want me there, it’ll have to be in a Kosher place. Otherwise (and trust me, I understand)…my best regards, and hope you all have a good time.

CM, of course we want you there–but I’m not planning on having aything to eat, just a drink, so you can join me in a Kosher cream sody-pop or something.

CM, I’m sure it’s not a kosher restaurant, but can you come to just hang out, like Flora suggested? It would be great to meet you and argue about Giuliani.

Since I might be the first one there, here’s my description: I am wearing a blue shirt, black pants and have a black fleece jacket. I’m tall and stocky and have scraggly shoulder length dark brown hair. I will also probably be guzzling vodka.

Melanie is extremely close to my real name, so please call me that, unless you want to deal with ridiculous pronunciations.

This is how I picture everyone else who may be coming:
Flora: Victorian (including parasol, esp after the corset/veil comment in the hats thread)
Uke: Harry Anderson in a tweed jacket (got that from Flora)
Manhattan: Since he’s living on Tums, Vitamin E and Rogaine, I picture a bald guy with bad acne and a beer gut. (sorry)
Alphagene: Tall guy in a lab coat
CMKeller: Orthodox Jewish look (which is very cool) - black suit, hat, sensible shoes
Cap’n Crude: button down plaid shirt type guy

Oh, and if you’d like to score points with Flora and me, I suggest you all show up with Fedoras on your heads.
