One can and should hit a woman in exactly the same circumstances one can and should hit a man: self-defense or the defense of others, after verbal warnings have been delivered and ignored and you’ve tried removing yourself from harm’s way and the offending party follows or traps you.
Period. End of motherfucking story.
Let me make it eminently clear here and now and for all time that I agree wholeheartedly, and am neither trying to justify nor qualify my behavior. I do feel better for being yelled at, however. Regardless of what is and isn’t deserved, something made me very sad and it makes me feel a bit better if I can be convinced that I did something to precipitate it. (even if she made the decision before I did that).

I wonder if anybody can come up with a reason why, for instance, a woman who is a 200 lb body builder and a black belt in judo, and who is trying to do you serious bodily injury, is beyond the normal bounds of self defense. But someone who is 3/5 her size and without any martial arts training would be guaranteed a black eye if they started swinging first… and happened to have a penis.

I totally agree. Those reasons are rare but gender has nothing to do with it.

Hmmm, if it really were a slap with no marks left, not to condone it or anything, but threatening suicide is much worse, IMO. All three of them don’t deserve anyone.

Both men, both my size or bigger and both picked the fight. The one, well documented, threatened my family again after first intentionally coming close to my year and a half old infant walking with her nanny with his car. I absolutely will not give up the right to defend myself or my family. That, and the fact I threatened him with much worse pain if he ever did it again is the one reason he’s left us and other neighborhhod children alone since. Yes, he’d done it to others before.
The inclination for some here to posit the most ridiculous scenarios to justify a bullshit point never ceases to amaze me. Saddens me too as I used to have respect for hajaro and FinnAgain but right now I never want to read another load of crap they’ve to offer. Have you no fucking disgression? No sense of proportion? I think I’ve stated before that the only good reason why it’s worse for men to hit women (and this is not necessarily my own view, just my observation), is that most men are stronger physically than most women.
If my mother were to hit my dad with all of her strength, she might leave a bruise. My dad, using all of HIS strength, would land my mother in the hospital.
That’s the only decent justification I could buy.
I, for one, don’t question your right to choose to punch such a man, as long as you’re willing to serve the legal punishment for assault if he chooses to press charges. I just think you’d be equally justified in hitting a woman doing the same thing. That’s where we seem to part ways, and I don’t get why you wouldn’t defend your family against some woman threatening your infant with her car.

For instance, one of my profs in college was a female body builder. Unquestionably she was in much better shape than I was, and actually threatened me physically on one occasion. If she had taken a swing at me… I’d have been “ridiculous” for trying to stop her?
I do not think that word means what you think it means.
So… all women are frail little butterflies, or something? You can’t imagine a non “ridiculous” situation where someone might have to offer physical resistance to someone who happens to have a vagina? If it had been a woman who came close to running your child down, it would have been “ridiculous” to defend your offspring from her?
