First, as many know, I’m Catholic. As hated by Hitler as Jews were.
Now, I’ve been promised by Abe Foxman of the ADL, among many others, that “The Passion of the Christ” would result in the streets being run red with the blood of Jews over this movie. The anti-Semitism, we were told, would become overwhelming to the point that Jews would be wontanly killed because of it. What the fuck, racists?!?
Where are the headlines?!? You bunch of slackers. What the hell are you doing right now that keeps you from the ever-important task of tormenting people that have a certain religious belief? Oh, that’s right, your mom’s basement is flooded and you have to mop up, thereby leaving you no time to spew vitriol about Jews.
Ready to hit “post”, but can’t let ole Abe off on this one. You, sir, tried to get a movie banned/protested because you didn’t agree with someone whom made a film based on what he beleived in down to his soul. When Mel kicks your ass, lemme know. Otherwise, debate what you disagree with, DO NOT expect me to agree with what you arbitrally find wrong, and then put as much stock in my opinion as you expect me to put in yours.
Once again, where the hell is the violence and mayhem promised by the “critics”?!?
He raised a big stink, but he has a $60 million operating budget. (He makes almost half a million in salary himself.) But even after all the trips to Rome and the ADL resignations, he still declared that the film is not anti-semitic.
First they changed the laws so that one could beat/molest jews without breaking the law.
So they’d have to get a majority in the legislative bodies in various governments to change the laws so that one could engage in ‘lesser’ race bashing.
Racist groups usually get young people and poor people cause they are easier to sway.
The Patriot act actually curtailed some of the racist recruiting going on, forgot where I read that tho. Maybe washington post or times not sure.
Jews like to drag out the holocaust and yell poor woe is me, the only problem is they werent the only ones, and throughout history people have killed people on large scales. i.e. the armenians (spelling)
NE ways as long as people actually pay attention to what is going on in the world, then something like that might not happen again.
Actually, he said Foxman and many others, and I think it’s pretty clear that he was just using rhetorical license. The use of hyperbolic metaphor to paraphrase the position of opponents is a time-honored technique of rhetoric — one that any seasoned Doper will surely have encountered.
Merely as a point of perverse historical interest, Hitler himself was, nominally, a Catholic.
Germans were required by law to tithe to a church, and to declare their membership therein. Hitler was, by this definition, Catholic. He didn’t particularly care one way or the other, so long as they didn’t deride his own Stephen King meets Wagner/Nietzche mythos. Most historians I’ve read say he didn’t take that seriously either. It was kind of his version of a flight suit/bombardier jacket.
What Hitler would not tolerate were Catholics who insisted on being Christians.
But did Hitler hate Catholics as much as Jews? Not even close. If you listen closely, you can hear the ghost of Barbara Tuchman scolding you.
Abe Foxman was baptized a Roman Catholic. And I think Christians often get criticized when they complain of persecution. Come down off your cross and such.
If I can make it out through the incoherence, the op is claiming that many claimed that significant forces were out trying to ban this movie out of fear that it would have a direct and immediate violent antisemitic effect.
This is bullshit. Absolute bullshit. An out and out lie.
Short of a few extremists who wanted to ban it in Israel (obviously its target market  ) no one was arguing for its being banned, nor claiming that it would, in and of itself, cause Krystalnacht the Sequel. In fact few even directly claimed it or Mr. Gibson were antisemitic … and those who did only did so after they had been successfully baited into it by a hand skillfully played by a publicity seeking Mr. Gibson.
There was instead concern expressed that certain aspects of the movie were fodder for antisemites who would gladly resurrect the Christ-killer myth. And attempting to do some reduction of ignorance outreach on how the Christ-killer myth has been used as the justification for many a massacre through many the year. And trying to engage Mr. Gibson in a dialogue about how the movie could be true to his religious vision and yet still sensitive to Jewish concerns. Mr. Gibson instead choose to fan the flames with great adroitness, realizing that disrespecting the Jews would garner cheap publicity and be unlikely to offend most of his target audience. He was correct and Mr. Foxman (and others) were foolish enough to be used by him.
I maintain my belief that a large scale media-hyped rebirth of the Christ-killer myth is unhelpful in this particular era where violence against Jews is increasing in many countries and where it is becoming increasingly acceptable to make statements about Jewish conspircies, and where it is increasingly popular to say “Holocaust Schmolocaust, people died, some happened to be Jews, war is Hell.” As I’ve said in other threads, this isn’t about the Nazi-wannabes clownishly prancing about (“Lookit me lookit me! Aint I scary!” Pathetic.) It is about the more reasonable people who are all too happy to believe that the Holocaust is an exaggeration, that Jews have nothing to fear from antisemitism if it really even exists, that Jews really do have too much power, and that are all too happy to use the cover of concern for the plight of the Palestinians to make their Jew-hating seem respectable. (And please do not go into the tripe about how any criticism of Israel is called antisemitism, that is a pile of crap, there is justifiable criticism of Israeli policies and there Jew-haters who cross the line, happy to explain the difference again to any who need to hear it.)
So duffer, please shut the fuck up. No one said what you said they said except maybe Mel claiming that such was what was being said. Catholics were not targeted for extermination because they were biologically “an inferior race”. The vast majority of European Catholics did not get shipped to death camps. The Romani? They deserve some remembrance and it has been in too short of supply (too few survived to bear witness and their numbers were so small to start with.) Your position is crap.
More informed people than I will show up shortly, but we Jews consider people whose mother is Jewish to be Jews.
I believe that Hitler considered that a Jewish grandparent made one Jewish and a candidate for a death camp.
That’s a matter of contention. Judaism is a religion but there’s also a certain ethnic aspect to it as well. For example, there’s Tay Sachs syndrome, which is most often found in Ashkenazi Jews and is a wholly genetic disease.
