You get one source of animal protein for the rest of your life

For some strange reason, a wizard says that you only get one source of animal protein for the rest of your life. Being a kind sort, you can still get protein from dairy, legumes, etc so you don’t have to take that into consideration.

Which are you choosing?

  • Beef
  • Pork
  • Poultry
  • Seafood

Seafood for the variety. Some of it even tastes like beef or poultry. I’m not familiar with a fish that tastes like pork, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there was one (oh, but I will miss bacon…).

Bacon was the deciding factor for me.

Do I still have to pay for all the protein I consume? If I were still living in Australia, the answer would have been an easy Lamb as there was easily accessible, high quality, affordable lamb. Outside of Australia, it’s still my favorite meat but getting access to it at a price that doesn’t break the budget is a real challenge.

I knew I was forgetting an obvious one. In my defense, here in the southwestern US, lamb is practically impossible to find.

I think pork because there is just so much variety you can get from it compared to beef or chicken. Also, bacon.

For me it’s beef in all its glorious forms (ground, roast, and steak) right up to the day my heart explodes.

I don’t eat much beef any more, anyway, and chicken is good mostly in that it doesn’t clash with whatever flavors you’re pairing it with. And about the only time I eat seafood is at Lenten fish fries (where I could just get pierogi instead), and on the (very, very rare) occasion I find someplace with good calamari.

Bacon, though, is irreplaceable.

Oh, and the other common American meat you’re missing is turkey. I would miss Thanksgiving turkey, but not nearly as much as I would Easter dandelion-salad-with-bacon-dressing.

If “seafood” is all lumped together, it’s a no-brainer; I would happily become a pescatarian and probably not even miss meat all that much.

If we have to specify a type of seafood, I’m going for shrimp, Not because they’re my favorite kind of shellfish ever, but because they’re versatile, readily available, and easy to cook with, which seem like more important qualities under the circumstances.

I would consider that to be a form of poultry.

When I read the headline, I immediately said “chicken.” (Well, actually I said, “Chicky, chicky, chicky,” but that’s not relevant.) Then I remembered that I actually prefer turkey in sandwiches, so I was at an impass. Then I opened the thread, and saw that I could choose poultry and get both, so it’s all good.

I had beef twice this week, and that was more than enough. I might have it again in another week or two.

I am choosing seafood…then I am teaching pigs how to swim.

Does pork include long pig?

Elk.

Chicken (poultry), mostly because it can be prepared in so many ways: baked, grilled, barbecued, sautéed, batter fried, even boiled. Try all of those with beef or pork. Seafood has many prep options, but can’t be BBQed.

Yeah, seafood is too broad a category to not go with. If it was “seafood (one species)” then my answer is poultry. I like beef more, but eating only red meat for the rest of my life is probably a bad idea.

Beef or pork can be prepared in all those ways.

I already eat more chicken than beef. I like bacon and ham. But there’s more ways to cook chicken.

I voted poultry.

Yeah, was gonna say … nothing especially unique to chicken. I prepare beef and pork in all those ways, except maybe for batter frying. I bread and shallow fry instead. That said, I don’t batter fry chicken, either, breading and frying instead, like for a schnitzel or chicken parmesan.

Damn that terrible wizard! I wavered between seafood and poultry, and impulsively chose poultry because I eat lots of chicken, love turkey, and am happy to explore pigeon, quail, etc. - which to the extent I have eaten them have been delicious.

But reading the answers of others and agreeing/disagreeing with their comments, I should probably have chosen seafood.

If the wizard will accept a do-over, make it seafood for me.
