I started a thread in MPSIMS (two tough questions) and clearly stated it was from an email forward. (i.e junk) and people took the time to respond as if I was some pea brain who couldn’t tell bullshit from truffles.
Further, the op in question gave incomplete information, and then pointed out the stupidity of making judgements based on incomplete info. I guess that went over some heads, though, as I was judged by some based solely on the factual merit of that post, or by my username.
And if you wanna know what my username means, then ask me. Or read the doper name game thread - its in there.
I reserve final judgement on you guys and/or girls until I have more complete information.[/taking the highroad]
I wouldn’t take people in that thread completely seriously re: jokes about your username. And boy, if you think that was bad, you should have seen the greeting moronmountain got;)
Dopers in general have a rather low tolerance level for glurge.
Ah, well the only reason this became a pit thread is that the orig. thread was locked, & I couldn’t respond to those who missed the point of my op. And I’ve never started a pit thread before, so the simplest excuse I could find to do so was eagerly jumped upon.
Actually, just saying “Here’s an e-mail forward:” and then posting it tells us nothing about your personal feelings about the content or, for that matter, what your intentions in posting the forward here were. There are more than enough drive-by fundies who post things like that as if they were in dead earnest for most of us to at least look askance at it.
Expecting us to read your mind isn’t a good way to start out here.
And there really truly are more glurge-swallowers than the average sane person could even imagine. The idea that one may have found their way here (it’s happened before…we’ve even had Jack Chick adherents on the board) isn’t completely off the wall.
You know why Hitler was a vegetarian? He had gastric problems. Yes, the stomach of hitler HATED meat. Why bring yourself to the level of Hitler’s stomach by being vegetarian? Eat meat, like any humble God-fearing WASP would.

This was really just my first pit thread, and I was hoping to spark a good flaming, if even of myself. Seems nothing I try these these days gets the intended reaction (my philosophy t.a. was none too impressed by my recent ‘This Essay Does Not Exist’ essay, although after an appeal to the dept. chair I got a b+)
Eh, FTR, I think they came down on you pretty hard, for a newbie whose offense was simply “posting glurge without comment” in MPSIMS. Hint: next time you want to post glurge (and lots of us DO occasionally post glurge, 'cause we love it, it’s hilarious), think of some way to put a spin on it. Don’t just Copy and Paste and hit Submit. Another hint: lurk some more, before you start any more threads. Seems like you need to get a little better feel for what we’re about. I just visited your “tugboat” thread, which wasn’t bad, but again, you didn’t SAY anything, you just posted the link.
The SDMB is a tough town, though. We tend to play rough sometimes. Consider yourself warned. So you have two choices now–you can suck it up, learn from the experience, and move on.
Or you can quit.

Me, I’d suggest you stay. It wasn’t that bad a flameout for a newbie–I’ve seen worse, lots worse. You experienced more of a “sputter”.
I belatedly realized that you have a third option: You can hang around the boards, and whine about the unfairness of it all, and bitch, and piss and moan, and sing the “nobody likes me, everybody hates me, guess I’ll go eat WORRRRRMS” song endlessly.
Until somebody gets totally fed up and REALLY goes after you in the Pit. Then you’ll get that ass-flaming you said you wanted.
And I’m sure it will all be a learning experience for you…

anyway, come on now, cut em a little slack. posting with the intention of getting a reaction is not quite the same as trolling. Trolling is a subset of that kind of action, but they arent the same. if that was true, everyone who posted in the pit would be a troll. why post a rant if you dont’ want a reaction. Anyway, I don’t really have an opinion on the OP, but the “troll” label gets tossed around too fucking liberally these days.

I just can’t figure this guy out: He wants sympathy, yet offers no information or experience (on the boards, that is) to lend credibility to himself. You want me to feel sorry for a newbie that gets all bent out of shape? Sorry, ain’t gonna happen.
And I agree that “troll” does get tossed around quite a bit. Note I hadn’t called said poster a troll, just indicated that his rebuttal lent itself to the definition. . . Again, I have no idea where this guy is coming from, and until he shows a little more patience and practice, I just won’t care either.
