I usually don’t see movies twice. I totally can’t relate to people who brag about seeing Star Wars 73 times. (And I liked Star Wars.) If I see something twice, it’s because I fell asleep and missed some crucial scenes the first time I went. If not, I’ll have to wait like a year before I can stand to sit through it again–no matter how good it was. If I’ve seen something, I’ve SEEN it.
Usually.
But I broke my own rule when “Oh Brother Where Art Thou” came out. Saw it two times in three nights, and these were worknights not weekend nights. I’m probably going to see it again, first opportunity. I don’t really know why. Maybe it was that swell old-timey music. Maybe it was those cute li’l girls singin’ gospel tunes. Maybe it was cute George Clooney, making up cute with his spitfire ex-wife, cute Holly Hunter. Maybe it was those cute convicts George hung out with. Or maybe the cute Ku Klux Klan, marching around like the Winkies in the Wizard of Oz. Don’t know.
I swear, I haven’t reacted like this to a movie since La Bamba.
What movie made YOU break your longstanding behavior patterns?
When the movie Labyrinth came out, I saw it with friends. They thought it was ok. I said, yeah, it’s ok. I took them home, and said I needed to get some things done. Then I rushed back to the theater and saw the next showing. I loved the movie, and I had a feeling it wouldn’t be showing at theaters long.
They thought I was nuts when I told them I’d gone back to see it again. No, wait, they thought I was nuts before that.
I saw Time Bandits by myself. I then saw it again with my brother and a friend after telling them it was good.
I took my niece to see Toy Story and then told a friend it was a good movie. He wanted to take his kids to see it but his wife was working so I went again with them.
And I used to supervise the movies at Attica prison which meant I had to watch the same movie four times in a row every weekend.
My dark secret: I watch Transformers: The Movie atleast once a month.
Before you laugh yourself sick, I explain my reasoning.
I saw that movie when I was pretty young, and my family life was going to hell. My parents were breaking up (which really was for the best, in retrospect, but at the time was just painful) and they took me to see this movie.
First, I thought is was the coolest thing ever.
Second, it is a memory where I was unaware of the problems in my life for the first time in a while.
Third, I got crackerjacks.(at the time, they were a rare delicacy for 7 year olds, :))
So now when I watch it, I fall back to that place, and nothing bugs me, my problems fade, and damn it`s a cool movie.
Raising Savannah w/ Holly Hunter & Nickolas Cage–I can’t explain it–I almost never watch a movie twice and don’t ususally find overt stupidity humourous, but this one is so unabashedly overacted & campy I just wonder how they managed to film it w/out melting into piles of giggles.
Also, “The Game” w/ Sean Penn & Michael Douglas. The first time I didn’t see the beginning & was slightly confused. The second time, I ‘got it,’ and was blown away by the premise. The third time, I just had to try to figure out the details & find out how everything fit into Douglas’ life so smoothly and how he fell for it. I’d probably sit through it again.
Raising Savannah? Is that the sequal to Raising Arizona?
The only movie I’ve PAID to see twice is Man On the Moon. I don’t know why, but I loved it.
However, I’ve seen Ghostbusters about a thousand times, and I plan to see it another ten thousand.
Also, I’ve seen A Hard Day’s Night and Help! more times than I will admit to.
I don’t see movies twice on my own account. However, I saw the Matrix a second time in the theater, because I brought my little brother the second time.
I’ve also rented the Princess Bride, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and Army of Darkness a few times to introduce them to someone who’s never seen.
I routinely watch movies more than once on videotape, but it’s rare I’ll see them twice in a theater. I made exceptions for Fried Green Tomatoes, Lion King, Sense and Sensibility, Persuasion, and Ghost.
I watch movies over and over again all the time. But I was so impressed by The Usual Suspects that my friend and I dragged some other friends to the theater the very next night. We even offered to pay for them to see it, if they’d just see the movie.
The movies that I own and watch at least once a month are Shakespeare in Love, American Beauty, Say Anything, ET, The Goonies, and Good Will Hunting. Okay, I also own Notting Hill and watch it a lot. OK? What the hell is wrong with that? Absolutely nothing! Just drop it!
The movies I’ve gone to see twice in theatres - Titanic (shut up, I was 16!), The General’s Daughter (I really liked the plot), and Kings of Comedy this past summer.
Also, when I was 13 I saw The Basketball Diaries five times, each time forcing an older guy I picked up to buy me tickets and sneak me in, due to my pathetic crush on Leonardo DiCaprio (which no longer exists, trust me). I also saw Romeo & Juliet several times. I claim the ignorance of youth for both of these!
There are many, many movies I enjoy watching over and over. That is why I have so many videos on the shelves. However, paying theater prices for a movie more than once is a very rare occurrence.
Having said that, I am going to see Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon again as soon as I am able. I don’t have the words to express just how wonderful I thought this movie was. Less recently, I paid to see The Sixth Sense twice; and when Pulp Fiction came out, Miramax got me for 11 admissions.
“American Beauty” 3 times
“Episode I” 4 times (Yeah, I like it! Except for JarJar)
“Titanic” 3 times (dating a girl who was nuts about it)
“Terminator 2” twice (the first movie I saw twice)
I think that’s it…
On DVD, I pull out “Field of Dreams” every 3 months or so. I like to watch “Fight Club” often as well. I’d watch “The Godfather” more, but now that I’ve seen DVD, VHS just doesn’t do it justice.
