Come on, Cat, play! it will be fun. Maybe not as much fun as trying to make everyone undead like last time and pretending to be an evil cursed Necromancer, but then hey, what is?
If subs are unlikely to be used, then #2 on the bump list.
Always good to give other people a go.
I kind of gave that some squinty eyes too (at first).
Not to jump the gun too much, but balance analysis of vanilla v. vanilla games is extremely straight forward. In this case, Town needs to lynch 5 scum to win (obvious). Scum need 4 mislynches to win (4 mislynches + 4 night kills + 1 Night Start = 9 dead Townies and a scum win).
If there were 20 players it would have been a first to 5 to win for both sides. As it is, it is 5 for Town, and 4 for scum (slight scum favor). But the ‘dossier’ stuff and dead people writing death scenes looks pro-Town… so the setup passes the smell test from my point of view.
There’s a pseudo-detective. Re-read the section about the Dossier system. There’s a logic and deductive element to this game as well as the softer skills of communication analysis. The idea was to give everyone something to do. Those who enjoy puzzle solving and logic challenges will have something to work with and those who can ferret hidden motives out of conversations will too. In fact, both are necessary because, as you’ve said, there is a higher number of scum than the overall numbers would justify without the Dossier system in place.
Enjoy,
Steven
Alright, you’ve convinced me, add me to the list.
Good point is **Diomedes ** going to play, I’ve got a bomb with his name on it
Hmm, interesting.
By the looks of it, everyone gets to play detective from the details that slowly get revealed.
The only thing that concerns me slightly is the long amount of time for the Days. A week is a very long time in these games for a single Day.
The other interesting twist is going to be receiving the death scene 48 hours into each game Day. That could shift a few votes around depending on the colour.
Is someone who has never played before and knows absolutely jack about the game able to join in? If so, I’d love to. If not, y’all have fun anyway. [ ::: sniff ::: ]
Joooiiin Ussss!!!
Joooiiin Ussss!!!
::makes beckoning motions to faithfool::
Those are the Max times for a Day and Night. Majorities and supermajorities can shorten Days, and if the Disgruntled Associates get their Night instructions in early they can shorten Nights.
Enjoy,
Steven
You kidding? We’ve got two players already volunteering to give up their seats if new players want to join. New players bring new ideas and creativity to the table, and that’s exactly what a game like this needs.
Enjoy,
Steven
I missed noticing my 3000th post.
Aww, here, have a cookie.
Enjoy,
Steven
Thinking about the rules, I have a few comments.
The Twist: I’m not a big fan of color, so I’m likely to take the default option of letting others write my death scene.
We get a piece of information that we may choose to reveal in our scene, or not. Will the default scene always include that information? Or, never? Or, determined by a coin flip?
How important to the Town is the information? Will it break the game if no one includes it their death scene? Will it break the game if everyone includes it?
I’m also not a fan of randomness in the game, once it’s started. How likely is it that the randomly determined info will break the game if certain pieces are quickly revealed? Or, never revealed?
The Dossier: I’m tempted, as a player, to immediately reveal my Dossier. Of course, if I’m scum, I’ll probably lie some. Is there any reason for a Townie not to truthfully reveal all their Dossier at the beginning?
Will everyone revealing their Dossier break the game? Does it make a difference if scum lie or tell the truth?
The Secret: yay! I love secrets.
Will early revelation/discovery of the secret break the game?
Obviously, the moderators may not be able to answer in detail, but any reassurances would be appreciated.

A note to CAIS, this game is based almost entirely on the real life games of mafia I used to play. The dossier throws a kink into things, but otherwise this is old fashioned straight forward mafia the way it was intended to be played…just…ya know…on the net.
So… uh… if you get four more today, any chance of starting early? Watching my game has me pretty much going insane to play again.
NAF and Mtgman, can you give me a ballpark figure for a range of how long you anticipate this game lasting? I’m thinking through most of January at least and possibly into March/April if it comes down to 3 players like Mafia V. Sound right to you guys?
Mildly important. The game won’t break either way.

I’m also not a fan of randomness in the game, once it’s started. How likely is it that the randomly determined info will break the game if certain pieces are quickly revealed? Or, never revealed?
If they are never revealed, it is a wash. There is a 17% chance that the scum will be outted in 5 days IF the information is interpreted correctlly and quickly.

The Dossier: I’m tempted, as a player, to immediately reveal my Dossier. Of course, if I’m scum, I’ll probably lie some. Is there any reason for a Townie not to truthfully reveal all their Dossier at the beginning?
wouldn’t you like to know.

Will everyone revealing their Dossier break the game? Does it make a difference if scum lie or tell the truth?
I am a bit hurt that you would think the game could be broken so easily.

The Secret: yay! I love secrets.
So do we!

Will early revelation/discovery of the secret break the game?
See answer about being hurt.

I’ll tell you this. Every one of the things you’re asking has been asked and answered in the design and development process. The answer to almost all of them is, “that’s for us to know and for you to find out.”
Re: your question about inclusion of new info in non-player written death scenes, the answer is no. If you choose to forego your death scene from your point of view then the remaining players have to puzzle out what happened to you from second-hand sources and will lose the insights you had.
I answered this one specifically because early drafts of the rules post addressed this and somehow in the revisions this got muddied a bit, but the rule was set and agreed on.
Enjoy,
Steven
Thanks for the answers, NAF. I’m not so concerned about the game being broken easily (but always nice to see that you’ve covered the basics), but of being accused by other players of trying to break the game when I propose some hare-brained scheme (as I am wont to do).
I may still write my death scene, but it’s good to know I won’t unduly hurt the Town if I don’t.

Well, my hope is that players have learned something from Firefly and Bladerunner and won’t lynch people for stupid reasons anymore.
