Young Sheldon to hit the tube

CBS has apparently ordered development of a series about Sheldon Cooper at the age of 9, living with his family in East Texas and going to high school. Series due to start in the 2017-18 season. Casting is set, apparently, per Variety. Jim Parsons will apparently narrate in his character as adult Sheldon.

Somehow this doesn’t have the ring of success. I could be wrong, of course, I frequently am.

Will Lauri Metcalf play his mom? I’d watch it if she does.

Laurie Metcalf’s real-life daughter Zoe Perry is going to play Sheldon’s mom.

Most of it is already written, they just have the kid repeat all of his best lines.

I dunno, Dougie Houser worked. But yeah, this sounds like a poor bet.

I agree with your assessment. Sheldon Cooper is a great comedic character, but I don’t see the appeal of this “Sheldon as a kid” scenario.

“Sheldon as a kid” is one of the characters on the insanely schlocky “Scorpion.” The kid character. He is insufferable.

At least this Sheldon show will be the opposite of “Scorpion” In that it won’t be a bunch of savants walking around congratulating themselves about how different they are. It’ll probably just be a bunch of Texas Christians telling a little boy how annoying he is.

So maybe it’ll be good?

Well now.

I wonder if they will really set it in the 90s.

Because Wesley Crusher worked out so well on ST:TNG.*

Speaking of which, what about Wheaton and this show? We know that he didn’t show up for the 1995 convention that young Sheldon went to in Jacksonville, MS. Maybe they’ll meet in a dream/fantasy sequence.

  • You don’t get a Usenet group called “alt.wesley.crusher.die.die.die” if you’re well liked.

I don’t think this will go anywhere. Nine year old geniuses don’t seem particularly amusing. Make it when he’s about 18 and focus equally on his hot twin sister- now you’re talking.

Oh yeah, I’d go for that!

I wonder if this will be as successful as Joey.

Perhaps Laurie Metcalf will play his Meemaw.

That’s what I was thinking. Perhaps, through CGI, they can extract him from some Stand by Me footage.

And how about a dream sequence about Amy Farrah Fowler? Plenty of sources for Mayim Bialik.

I’m looking forward to seeing him chased up a tree by a chicken.

The kid is 7 in real life, but is playing a 6-year-old on Big Little Lies and now will be cast as a nine-year-old. The kid has range!

This will be beyond awful, even if the kid is great.

I’m thinking maybe Chuck Lorre needs to slow the fuck down.

Better watch it Rick, you’ll get warned for using that language.

Has there ever been a prequel to a sitcom like this before?

While reading the posts here I started thinking if there’s ever been a show like this, recounting a popular adult character’s childhood?

A Pup Named Scooby-Doo was a prequel to the Scooby series.
ALF the animated series was a prequel to the ALF series.

I think they’d do better with TBBT: TNG, about all their kids, with the current cast as the older generation.
