There are only golden retreivers, and all those other dogs/pets.
Will a moderator please move this to GQ - and might as well lock it now that it has been answered?
The Newfoundland dog. NOW it’s been answered.
The dog you grew up with. In my case, the Shih-tzu.
The Mastiff.
Dobermans or standard poodles. Dobermans probably edge out poodles because of the ease of coat care.
Siamese cats. They’re almost like a different species.
I have no experience with birds.
StG
Dog: Pekinese or Pug. I have a soft spot for Dobermans just because that’s our current dog, but I squeeeee for the Pekes and pugs.
Cats: All, but aren’t Sphynxs cool?
No birds, please!
I think I’ve found the perfect breed for me although there are still a couple that I want to try. The Anatolian Sheppard is amazing. I’ve had mine for almost a year and he is the calmest puppy I’ve ever seen, and I’ve had an English Bulldog.
When I go for a hike once ever couple of weeks he can run all day. In fact when he was six months old he swam 2 miles in a river following me on a fishing trip and then swam half way back with out any rest because he couldn’t touch the bottom it was only on the way back after about 4 hours that he couldn’t make it and the current started to carry him down stream. This winter we never went anywhere and he slept all day and never moved. I drove 14 hrs back to California and he slept the whole way and never got out of the car then got there and slept all night long.
Now that he is a year old or so he’s about 29" tall at the withers and probably about 100# so he’ll end up being a big boy. Oh ya and I almost forgot, he listens perfectly to two commands, sit and come, which is all I’ve taught him but he’ll come from over a quarter mile away every time and sits as long as he can see me.
I like the cut of your jib, sir
Dogs:
Salukis, for their complete lack of respect for whatever you the pathetic human want them to do coupled with their immense preference for having you the beloved human along while they do whatever it is that they want to do (mainly run around like insane things), and Afghans, for combining that same attitude with a charmingly quirky sense of humor (but much higher grooming requirements).
Cats/birds:
No experience.
Split response. If you want a DOG dog, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. If you want a lapdog, a Lhasa Apso. I like both.
Australian Shepherds
Short haired Barn Cats
Bantam Chickens
Quarter Horses
Dachshunds! Weenies! Hotdogs!
Working Border Collies (no AKC Barbie Collies or Flyball bred maniacs) I want the real thing, with sheep, thank you.
Tabbies- long or short. Preferably with purr box.
I’ve had cats ever since I was a kid, but I adopted my first Siamese mix, Diego 2 years ago. As someone posted above, Siamese are like a whole different species. He is vocal, needy, affectionate, playful, brave (but scared of silly things sometimes), curious, loves to climb as high as possible, all the normal things a cat does - times 10. He loves everybody and thinks everyone who visits has come to see him.
It is even more evident to me, because I adopted him with his littermate, Serafina who is a completely typical cat (except for her blue eyes). Quiet, tiny meow, plump, short tailed, placid in the extreme, but very very timid of strangers.
Now that I’ve had a Siamese cat (even just a mix!) I would never choose to adopt any other kind of cat, I’ve been spoiled.
Pup pup: border collie.
Kitteh: domestic longhair.
Birdy: macaw.
Boston Terrier. All the rest is commentary.
I think that Siamese are sort of like distilled cats. Meezers will do things in the loudest, most dramatic way possible. Some of them are pretty dumb, but most are very smart. Too smart, really. They will look at things, and you can practically see the little gears whirring around in their fuzzy heads. If I rearrange the furniture, my Sapphire will sit and look at it, get up, look at it from another angle, and then she will test it by jumping on it, and possibly from it to another area that has previously been unavailable to her. But she thought it through first, she didn’t just jump. I’ve had other cats before, I have a marmie boy now (and so does my husband), I’m sure I’ll have non-Siamese cats again…but meezers have a special place in my heart.
As for dogs, I really like the dogs that I’ve met and known. I think that German shepherds are great all around dogs. You want a friend? You want protection? You want some cats herded? The German shepherd will be great, except for actually managing to herd the cats. She’ll try, but it won’t work. My parents had a trio of Maltese, and I think they’re great lapdogs, and alarm dogs. They are very loving and happy dogs. However, if you’re looking for protection, well, a little 5 pound dust mop isn’t going to do much except lick you to death. My brother had a trio of greyhounds, and they are very sweet dogs. They are also world-class couch potatoes. If you need a rug or piece of furniture held down, they can do that. They can also catch that damn squirrel that’s out in the yard, as long as he’s not too far off the ground.
I don’t know much about birds. We only had budgies when I was a kid, and since I’ve been an adult, I’ve had cats in the house, so I didn’t want to have birds too. I didn’t, and I don’t, think it’s a good combination. I did enjoy my budgies, though, and if I couldn’t have cats, I’d get some sort of bird in the parrot family.
Dogs- Gordon Setters, no questions asked. But Papillons are right up there.
Cats-Whatever mine are LOL. They are domestic long hairs, and they have wonderfully laid back, dog-like personalities.
Bird-cockatiels. I had one for 23 years and he was soooo cool.
Horses-Arabians. They have a repoutation for being high spirited, but they are very affectionate and people oriented.
I have never owned one but to me Golden Retrievers are THE dog. The prettiest dog ever.
We are currently trying to train a Standard Poodle puppy, she is gorgeous but she ain’t no Golden Retriever.
As far as cats go…well a house needs a cat, not as much as a dog but a house needs a cat. Black and white moggies are my favourite.
