I couldn’t find it in the archives, but my favorite one that I have actually seen with my own eyes was Man Finds Tiny Mermaid In Tuna Fish Sandwich!
I remember that one. The picture was of a man holding a sandwich with a fish tail hanging out the back and a human arm sticking out one side.

I remember that one! Though I’m pretty sure they had him trapped in a shed. The accompanying image was an artist’s impression of what he looked like.
It was definitely a WWN article, wherever else it may have shown up before or after.
Some friends were caught in a freak storm on Lake Ontario. They had an adventure geting back to port through monstrous waves. The story got into the Weekly World News, but it was the WWN that added the lake monster. 
My favorite was from right after the start of the Persian Gulf War (after Iraq had invaded Kuwait, back in the 1990s), which said, “IRAQI SUBS FOUND IN LAKE MICHIGAN!”
Apparently, they were hiding off Milwaukee, waiting for the order to come attack Chicago. Good thing that never happened.
I can’t remember the exact wording, but it was something like Three-Foot Tall Armenian Transvestite Trapped in Airplane Toilet. The story related how the guy had gotten sucked into the tank by the vacuum flush.
