Stuck at home for a couple of weeks, I’m embarking on a Jeff Bridges film fest. Lots of stuff to choose from–several classics along with a few stinkers, but overall a pretty impressive body of work. My three favorites going in, subject to reappraisal as I go along are:
Starman
The Men Who Stare At Goats
(and of course) The Big Lebowski
And yours?
(If you’re not a fan, feel free to chime in…no offense taken :))
Crazy Heart The Big Lebowski (The all time fav.) The Fabulous Baker Boys Tucker: The Man and His Dream TRON (So sue me.) Hearts of the West The Last Picture Show
If asked, I’ll say that I’m a fan of Jeff Bridges, yet when I look at his filmography, the only one that really stands out for me as “ooooh yeah let’s watch that” is Thunderbolt & Lightfoot, from 1974.
There is a video anthology out there based on Stephen King stories called, “Nightmares and Dreamscapes.” One epi is based on, “Battleground,” from his, “Night Shift,” collection. Bridges is the only main actor, there is no dialogue, he’s really good and it’s a load of fun.
No love for, “Thunderbolt and Lightfoot”? C’mon, he’s got great legs!
In addition to several good ones already mentioned, I’ll suggest Cutter’s Way, 8 Million Ways to Die, and True Grit. Also Tideland and Iron Man but Bridges only had supporting roles in those. And maybe Against All Odds - but I saw that one back in the eighties and I don’t know if it’s aged well.
Also The Fisher King, The Fabulous Baker Boys and Tucker. Last Picture Show is classic. I also liked Seabiscuit a great deal, but Bridges isn’t given a whole lot to do in that one; it’s just a great movie overall, a true story based on the best-selling book of the same name.
