…if only to have one of the very few SDMB postings consisting of one lett…OH DAMN
I’m alone in my love for Cabaret?
Ok, fine, then my second runners up are Goodfellas, Silence of the Lambs, Shawshank Redemption.
Pride & Prejudice (2005)
Little Women
The Little Mermaid
These are movies I can watch over and over. A movie I thought was outstanding, but really don’t want to see over and over is Crash.
Master and Commander: The Far side of the World
What About Bob?
Brokeback Mountain
Marry me! This is my go to movie. I cannot even tell you how many times I’ve watched it and I’ve thought a lot about why I like it so much and really cannot explain it.
olivesmarch4th, I Heart Huckabees is a close second. It’s all about the blanket!
The Lion In Winter and The Big Chill or The Great Escape or Slap Shot or. . .
Perhaps it would be best to just say The Lion In Winter and leave it at that. I’m not very good at playing favorites.
Ok, let’s make it a ménage à trois! The Royal Tennenbaums is also perfection.
We Were Soldiers Once…and Young. The only movie I know of that showed military life vs. just the military. The wives made this movie for me as much as the action. I’ve seen the support military wives give to each other in and out of crisis and they don’t get the praise they deserve. This is really the only depiction I’ve seen of that kind of thing.
Also, the portrayal of leadership.
Midnight Cowboy. A Christmas Carol (the Alastair Sim version).
I’m a divided personality, so each half gets a choice, right?
Glengarry Glen Ross
There are alot that I call “toss the remote movies” because if I see it on TV, no need to change the channel.
I don’t think any of my favorite movies have been mentioned, but here are five I have watched innumerable times and will watch again whenever I have a chance:
The Grapes of Wrath
Shane
Gigi
The Black Stallion
Alice In Wonderland (The Disney version)
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Gentleman’s Agreement
It would have to be The Adventures Of Robin Hood: I can’t think of a movie which achieves what it set out to do better, and in such gloriously memorable style. The music, the casting, the playing, the set and costume design are all impeccable, and Flynn simply owns the camera, although he’s given a fine run for his money by every other player, with special mention going to Basil Rathbone. The banqueting scene, where he strolls into Nottingham Castle carrying a deer, climbs onto the table and thus into a chair, which he proceeds to lean nonchalantly back in and be majestically insolent to everyone in the room, is a particular delight:
“You speak treason!”
“Fluently”
Runner up? Probably The Incredibles, for similar reasons: there is not a single thing wrong with this movie, and Samuel L. Jackson’s delivery of “I’m thirsty” is the single best line reading ever.
Jaws
Arsenic and Old Lace. I can’t think of any movie that I’ve probably watched more times, or that I’d be more willing to watch at any particular time if I had to pick one.
Behind that, it’s legion: Army of Darkness is another candidate. Casablanca is timeless, and I’d be just as willing to watch it. Sunset Boulevard is a contender–I’ve only watched it once, but I think it might have the staying power. (“I am big–it’s the pictures that got small!”) Wizard of Oz… I could go on for a while.
The Quiet Man - John Wayne, Maureen O’Hara, Barry Fitzgerald, Ward Bond, Victor McLaglen
“Red Will” Danaher: He’ll regret it till his dying day … if ever he lives that long.
Jean de Florette/Manon of the springs (really one movie in two parts)
But since the OP allowed himself to mention two movies, I’m going to use this thread to advertise Persepolis , an animated movie that didn’t get, IMO, the recognition it deserves (at least outside France).
I’d go with Z then.
Definitely not Q
Pulp Fiction
