When I was young, we did this but one better – peanut butter, bologna, cheese and grape jelly. Sloppy as all get out, but I remember finding it very delicious.
Now, the very idea of bologna gags me.
Tsubaki - if you’re in NYC any time, ring me up and I’ll grill you up sammitch anytime.
anenquiringmind - I grew up in the south and I never heard of pineapple sandwiches, especially not with mayo. Banana, yes, especially with peanut butter. But pineapple? I don’t think so.
My favorite samwich of all time is tuna (with a bit of mayo, very finely sliced fresh celery, and salt and pepper) with munster cheese on toasted whole wheat bread. I like to lightly coat one side of toast with mayo, too.
No one had named it after me yet, but I’ve turned many people onto this samwich. The munster cheese makes it special; also, you want to eat it fresh or else the bread gets soggy.
Okay, now that I’ve offended everyone with my smartass remarks, here is The Sandwich.
Take a rich, eggy, brioche or onion roll, or a fresh, buttery croissant. Split and lightly toast.
Put some really good pesto in a bowl. Add the following and toss until coated with the pesto:
[ul][li]Shredded chicken breast[/li][li]minced red onion or shallots[/li][li]minced oil-pack sun-dried tomatoes[/li][li]chopped roasted red bell pepper[/ul][/li]
Spread a very thin layer of mayonnaise or butter on the roll to seal it; place a thick layer of pesto chicken on the roll; flatten slightly and eat, making contented noises.
This is going to sound HORRIBLE, but honest it was the best sandwich I ever had. Thirty years ago, at Hymie’s Deli in Philadelphia, and I still remember it:
Lean corned beef, bacon, and chopped chicken liver, on rye.
I had perfectly normal cholesterol levels till I ate that one sandwich . . .
Horrible, my eye. That sounds transcendent. Yummy!
My personal favorite is the Oyster Loaf. Take a small French roll (about 12"), split it open and remove some of the inside of the bread, then coat with mayonnaise and dash liberally with Tabasco. Fill with a dozen batter-fried oysters. Eat. Mmmmmmmmmm…
Lightly buttered bread.
tomato slices & salsa on one peice,
a veggie burger already cooked,
slices of colby or pepper jack cheese,
the other piece of bread.
Had this one at a restaurant on campus here…sloppy, but divine:
[ul]
[li]two slices of foccacia bread[/li][li]grilled chicken breast[/li][li]red onion[/li][li]lettuce[/li][li]mayo[/li][li]balsamic vinegar[/li][/ul]
It just oozed goodness. If I were making it at home, I might add a couple of slices of swiss or provolone, and I’d be in sandwich bliss.
Traditional sandwich: really rare roast beef on light rye, with lots of salt and maybe a veneer of mayo if I’m feeling frisky.
Unusual sandwich: Two tablespoons of cream cheese and a teaspoon of white sugar on Pepperidge Farm thin-sliced white bread. It’s like lunch and dessert all at once!
Not so much a sammich, but the most divine thing in the world is to get a super-crunchy frenchstick, slice it into thick chunks, spread (very) liberally with butter and then paste the Vegemite on top.
Order a hamburger meal as well as a grand slam.
Open hamburger up and place bacon, sausage, eggs, and whatever else comes with the slam.
Place the pancakes around the variety of meats and then put the hamburger buns on top. Smother the middle with syrup.
