This idea was suggested at another community I am a member of and I thought it interesting enough to bring to the SDMB. The idea is simple, really… of all six series, which characters would you have serving together in which setting, regardless of continuity.
Try to give reasons as lists by themselves just aren’t that interesting to read.
Captain: Benjamin Sisko
The most well rounded of the five captains and a nice blend of the two that came before him, Kirk and Picard. While he is not as rash as Kirk, he is willing to bend (or break) the rules if he thinks they need to be but is also a regal figure much like Picard. His smoldering intensity is also quite captivating.
Chief Executive Officer: Kira Nerys
I almost went with Chakotay since his placidity would be the best way to offset Sisko’s intensity but in the end, I couldn’t break up my favorite Captain and First Officer. They just go so well together, especially with Sisko literally being Kira’s messiah and good friend.
Operations Officer: Data
No offense to Spock here as ops is pretty much science but I’m more a fan of Data and I think his trying to learn “human” emotion in my more alien crew would be an interesting angle, especially when you consider that most of the people I have picked can be pretty irritable and/or non-emotional. I imagine a lot more “Shut up, Data!” moments with this cast.
Tactical Officer: Worf
Of the options available to me, Worf was the most intriguing. I already have a non-emotional being as my Ops officer so Tuvok would be a bit of overkill and I am tired of Treks with only a token alien on the bridge so no Chekov or Reed.
Chief of Security: Odo
For the same Worf got his spot as Tactical officer. The choices were Worf, Odo, Tuvok, and Reed and I did not want a human or a doubled duty post for Worf, hence Odo. No relationship with Kira this time though. They are only good friends.
Chief Medical Officer: Julian Bashir
My favorite of the doctors and he’s added for much the same reason Data is besides. When he first enters the service, he is rather young, naive, and eager to please but with the officers he is working with, I think he would be molded into a more mature character fairly quickly. In addition, if or when his genetic enhancements are ever discovered, having Data around will also make him less cocky about his gifts.
Chief of Engineering: B’Ellana Torres
Considering my other choices, I think B’Ellana is a better fit than any of the other, more easy going engineers would be, plus, as I’ve mentioned a few other times, I would prefer to have a more diverse crew, even if by doing so, I wind up with an extra Klingon, if only by half.
Ship’s Counselor: Ezri Dax
I loved the character of Ezri so I have to include her in this even though I don’t really think a counselor is needed, let alone integral. Plus, I like that there’re more than just two women as starring characters, even if they’re still outnumbered two to one. Better than almost five to one.
Quark
Odo just isn’t as interesting with a foil, nor is the concept of the earth-centric Federation the same without the outsider willing to criticize it for its faults. Quark’s best episodes were the ones where he was the Greek chorus and I would miss those greatly so he must be kept.
To keep everyone as true to themselves as possible, it will be set on DS9 as its characters don’t work fully in other settings but no one else really loses anything in switching their locations so most of the villains will return as well, e.g. Dukat, Damar, Weyoun, Winn Adami, et al.
Recurring characters of note would be: Jake, Sisko’s son; Spot, Data’s cat; the Emergency Medical Hologram; Miles O’Brien, one of Torres’ engineers, and his family; Nog and Rom, Quark’s brother and nephew; and Hoshi Sato, for no other reason than you can just never get enough Hoshi.
