Your Ideal Star Trek Crew

This idea was suggested at another community I am a member of and I thought it interesting enough to bring to the SDMB. The idea is simple, really… of all six series, which characters would you have serving together in which setting, regardless of continuity.

Try to give reasons as lists by themselves just aren’t that interesting to read.

Captain: Benjamin Sisko

The most well rounded of the five captains and a nice blend of the two that came before him, Kirk and Picard. While he is not as rash as Kirk, he is willing to bend (or break) the rules if he thinks they need to be but is also a regal figure much like Picard. His smoldering intensity is also quite captivating.

Chief Executive Officer: Kira Nerys

I almost went with Chakotay since his placidity would be the best way to offset Sisko’s intensity but in the end, I couldn’t break up my favorite Captain and First Officer. They just go so well together, especially with Sisko literally being Kira’s messiah and good friend.

Operations Officer: Data

No offense to Spock here as ops is pretty much science but I’m more a fan of Data and I think his trying to learn “human” emotion in my more alien crew would be an interesting angle, especially when you consider that most of the people I have picked can be pretty irritable and/or non-emotional. I imagine a lot more “Shut up, Data!” moments with this cast.

Tactical Officer: Worf

Of the options available to me, Worf was the most intriguing. I already have a non-emotional being as my Ops officer so Tuvok would be a bit of overkill and I am tired of Treks with only a token alien on the bridge so no Chekov or Reed.

Chief of Security: Odo

For the same Worf got his spot as Tactical officer. The choices were Worf, Odo, Tuvok, and Reed and I did not want a human or a doubled duty post for Worf, hence Odo. No relationship with Kira this time though. They are only good friends.

Chief Medical Officer: Julian Bashir

My favorite of the doctors and he’s added for much the same reason Data is besides. When he first enters the service, he is rather young, naive, and eager to please but with the officers he is working with, I think he would be molded into a more mature character fairly quickly. In addition, if or when his genetic enhancements are ever discovered, having Data around will also make him less cocky about his gifts.

Chief of Engineering: B’Ellana Torres

Considering my other choices, I think B’Ellana is a better fit than any of the other, more easy going engineers would be, plus, as I’ve mentioned a few other times, I would prefer to have a more diverse crew, even if by doing so, I wind up with an extra Klingon, if only by half.

Ship’s Counselor: Ezri Dax

I loved the character of Ezri so I have to include her in this even though I don’t really think a counselor is needed, let alone integral. Plus, I like that there’re more than just two women as starring characters, even if they’re still outnumbered two to one. Better than almost five to one.

Quark

Odo just isn’t as interesting with a foil, nor is the concept of the earth-centric Federation the same without the outsider willing to criticize it for its faults. Quark’s best episodes were the ones where he was the Greek chorus and I would miss those greatly so he must be kept.

To keep everyone as true to themselves as possible, it will be set on DS9 as its characters don’t work fully in other settings but no one else really loses anything in switching their locations so most of the villains will return as well, e.g. Dukat, Damar, Weyoun, Winn Adami, et al.

Recurring characters of note would be: Jake, Sisko’s son; Spot, Data’s cat; the Emergency Medical Hologram; Miles O’Brien, one of Torres’ engineers, and his family; Nog and Rom, Quark’s brother and nephew; and Hoshi Sato, for no other reason than you can just never get enough Hoshi.

Here’s mine…

Captain: Ben Sisko, for all the reasons you mention

First Officer: Spock. Calm, cool and absolutely brilliant. His Vulcan discipline and attention to detail would be the perfect way to let Sisko focus on the bigger picture.

Ops: Data. Works very well with Spock, together there isn’t much the two couldn’t do. Except get dates unless provoked by a strange alien effect. ;>

Tactical: Worf, no brainer. The big guy needs to stay away from fisticuffs however unless it’s against a fellow Klingon, othewise he always gets his ass handed to him.

Chief Medical Officer: Dr. Leonard McCoy. Because Spock is there, and the two need each other to live. I’m convinced of it. He is also my favorite all around Trek character.

Chief Engineer: B’Ellana Torres, because.

“All six series” …? Are we counting the animated shows, giving us Robert April, M’Ress and that three-legged guy?

In any case, I’d gotta have Saavik in there somewhere, because I had a thing for the character and I have a photo from 1993 of myself and Robin Curtis (I’m doing the “fingers behind the head” bit to her, albeit with a Vulcan salute).

Yes. Even the cartoons if you are so inclined.

Hell, if **rjung **is reading this, he can even add New Frontier characters for all I care. I doubt anyone’s going to name a character I’m not familiar with unless you want to trot out some obscure Theiss panda that only guest starred once, which I wouldn’t put past someone like NoClueBoy.

Doctor Bashir and Nurse Chapel in sickbay
Trip in Engineering
M’res at Comunications
Ezri Dax as councilor
T’Pol as First Officer/Science Officer
Sisko or Archer as Captain
Reed on weapons and security
No clue who to put on helm

Me wandering the ship, admiring the eye candy.

Seriously, though, put them all on the Defiant (or NX-01), and that’s my crew.

This is more a ‘favourite character’ list than neccessarily who I think would be best in that position - Bashir, Trip, Reed, Sisko and Archer are, I think, the best candidates for their positions, the others were mostly the character in that particular seat that I like best (although I think Worf and Odo were better security officers than Malcolm, I like Malcolm better) - actually Bashir, Trip, Reed, Sisko and Archer are also my favourite of their particular position, too. And ‘eye candy’ joke aside, it’s not just because they’re all beautiful (although Chapel gets in mostly because Paris and Kes are the only other nurses who aren’t absolute non-entities). But I can’t really articulate WHY this particular list is my favourites.

‘Eye candy’ aspect taken out, I’d put Sulu on helm, because, again, he’s my favourite.

Whether I’d use Sisko or Archer as captain depends on which ship and era I was in. They’d each be in their respective ships.

Either Picard or Kirk for the captain, depending on whether I want to have to crew go on rip-roaring adventures, or have serious, classy, explorations of the galaxy and the sentient condition. (Maybe they can trade off, every other week)

XO…What the Hell, why not give Data a shot at it? Shake things up, a bit. Either him, or “Number One” from The Cage.

Security Chief: Evil-Universe Odo. Like the regular Odo, except he’s a sadist. (Better to have him inside the tent pissing out, than outside pissing in. To quote LBJ)

Either M’Ress or Hoshi for comm officer.

Yeoman Colt.

Medical officer…Leonard McCoy. Even if I have to bring him back as a Hologram.

Chief Engineer: Geordi LaForge. He always made lines like “recalibrate the deflector array” sound like he was actually doing something technical, not just reading off a cue card.

Science Officer: Spock. Nuff said.

7 of 9, but she’ll need a special role…how about “Tech Officer”? She’ll be in charge of studying, exploiting, and intigrating into ships systems any new technologies the ship runs across or invents. (And with her Nanoprobes, she could also ressurect anyone who dies.)

Tactical officer…That’s hard. Malcolm Reed, maybe. NOT Worf, unless he can work on his marksmanship. A lot.

As for the helmsman/Nav. officer who never gets any good character development…maybe just Kollos, the Medusan. You know, the one from the species so ugly it’d drive someone insane just to look at him?

And I’ll need a detachment of MACOs, I think. They’ll be outfitted with their choice of weaponry from between the 22nd-through-24th centuries. (And anything they can sneak away with from the 1930s, Nazi Planets™, or the 29th century.)

And the uniforms will either be TNG-era or the 2280s-era ones.

Janeway in command, Nog and Beatles-hairdo-Chekov on helm, Uhura on Comm, the recombined Tuvok and Neelix entity in the galley, The Doctor (first season) in sick bay, Alexander Roshinko on security, Wesley Crusher as science officer, Morn tending bar in Ten-Forward, Guinan as ship’s counselor, Kai Wynn as the ship’s spiritual advisor, Tribbles as ship’s mascot, Bones as Ship engineer (Just to hear him snarl, “Dammit, Janeway, I’m a medical officer-- not a mechanic!”) – the ship, of course, being the wrecked and salvaged Klingon Bird of Prey of Star Wars movies 3 and 4, lost in the Gamma Quadrant, er, in the 21st century. All of which should easily contribute to this being the most obnoxious ship in the 'fleet.

What, no Garak?

Oversight on my part. As the best written (and acted) character in all of Trek, he will of course be showcased often.

Why you guys want to talk about this? Star Wars totally sucks man…

Oh, yeah forgot to add:

sniff sniff

Man, it smells like virgins in here…
okay I’ll stop now…(big Star Trek fan here)

Anyone you want, but I’d like to have in Lt. Uhura, Deanna Troi and yeoman Rand…

Commanding officer: Kira Nerys
Executive officer: T’Pol
Chief medical officer: Beverly Crusher
Science officer: Jadzia Dax
Engineer: B’ellana
Ops: Uhura
Helm: Ro Laren
Yeah, you heard me. All the hot babes. You know you wanna serve on the USS Friedo.

Captain: Benjamin Sisko
As people above have said, he’s a good mix. Not as rash as Kirk, but not one to deal with everything by calling a staff meeting the way Picard does. I love Picard, but Sisko is a little more fun.

XO: Spock
One of the best characters in Star Trek history. Riker and Chakotay are no comparison. I really like Kira, but I’ve already chosen Sisko as Captain and I don’t want to just recreate DS9 here. As for T’Pol, she’s just a pale immitation of the original.

Ops: Data
I’m thinking pre-emotion chip Data here. I realize that’s two “logical” characters with him and Spock, but I think his struggle to understand emotion is a good counterpoint to Spock’s choice of Vulcan logic over human emotion.

Helm: Tom Paris
Just a much more fleshed-out and interesting character than any of the other helmsmen. Sulu and Mayweather usually don’t have that much to do . . . and the Next Generation didn’t even really have a consistent helmsman. Ro Laren was an interesting character, but Paris had seven full seasons of charcter development, so I’ve got to give it to him.

Tactical: Worf
He ought to balance out the bridge a bit, since he’s kind of the opposite of the emotionless Spock and Data. Plus, I think he’s appeared in more Trek episodes than any other character. (O’Brien has two more seasons of DS9, but Worf was in a lot more Next Generation episodes.)

Security: Odo
Odo is one of my favorite Trek characters, and it’s nice to include an alien who’s really, well, alien. Plus I already have Worf on the bridge, so there was really no other good choice.

Chief Engineer: Trip Tucker
I’m not that big a fan of B’Elanna (plus we’ve already got a Klingon raised by humans, do we really also need a half-Klingon half-human?) And Scotty just isn’t that interesting. I almost went with Geordi, but I like Trip’s personality a bit more – plus I wanted to include someone from Enterprise

Medical: “Bones” McCoy
I just love McCoy’s gruff demeanor, and he and Spock are terrific together. But I’ll stick Julian Bashir in here as his assistant, because he works so well with some of the other characters I’m going to include.

Counselor: Kes
Let’s be honest, these ship’s counselor types are always annoying. I found Kes a bit more likable than Deanna “Let me tell you what you’re feeling” Troi.

Science Officer: Jadzia Dax
Spock’s already on board, and I don’t think we need another Vulcan science officer. And anyway, with her however many lifetimes of experiences, Dax is just more interesting (than T’Pol, not more interesting than Spock).

Transporter Chief: Miles O’Brien
O’Brien is one of my favorites – sort of an “everyman” type character, very different from the usual Trek officers. I had to fit him in somewhere.

Communications Officer: Hoshi Sato
To be honest, I just think there ought to be another woman on the bridge. Neither Uhura nor Hoshi are all that interesting to me, but with Hoshi there’s still the hope that they’ll do a little more with her in the new season of Enterprise. I’m not holding my breath, though.

Setting: DS9
The station gives us some of the best ongoing plot lines, and so many delightful supporting characters. This way we get to enjoy the Quark/Odo interaction, as well as Bashir/Garak. (Garak’s precence was half the reason I included Bashir as “Deputy Chief Medical Officer”, the other half being O’Brien.) But I’d also give them lots of reasons to get the whole bridge crew together and take the Defiant somewhere.

Ship; Klingon Negh’Var

Captain; Ka’ D’Argo - lets see how he commands a ship with the finest in Klingon technology, see how the Negh’Var compares to a Peacekeeper Command Carrier

Science officer; John Crichton - what can i say, he’s a damn scientist

Tactical officer; Scorpius - the sharpest, most devious mind in the Uncharted Territories

Weapons officer; Worf - i have to have at least one klingon on board, right?

Engineer - B’Elanna Torres

MACO commander; - Officer Aeryn Sun

Ships Counsellor; - P’au Zotoh Zhann (hey this is Trek here, i can ressurect her from the dead

Token Crazy Ensign; Stark

Mess hall; Noranti and Neelix (i know, i know, that’s just mean, right

Financier; Rygel XVI

Morale officer; Chiana (nudge, nudge knowhatimean say no more? )

Helm; Pilot

Transporter Chief; Sikozu “I can go places you cannot” Shanti Shanu

Throw in Hoshi at comms, Rand at yeomanry, and Seven at whatever else is available, ans specify that the uniform will be TOS issue, and we’re cooking.

As much as I love Sisco, nobody has mentioned the the character who embodies the essence of what a Trek Captain should be: Sulu in ST VI.

“She’ll fly apart!”

“Fly her apart, then!!”

Brilliant.

Qapla quick notes as I have to run and just now saw this:

Thanks for the mention of Colt already. I want her (TOS vintage) in the worst way. Yeah, bent over an intake manifold. Yowsa!

My choice for captain causes me much internal debate. But, I think i would have to go with Season 6 & 7 and FC Picard. He retains his quiet dignity while still able to lash out in violent action (premeditated even) when the situation calls for it. Both reasonable and passionate. That’s how he should’ve been written all along. (Stupid Technology Unchained Utopia of early TNG!)

Close second (by mere percentage points) would be Sisko. That man rocks!

Get everyone off of that stupid, go nowhere space station, tho. Give them a starship!
Back later with more.

Best recurring guest star is Q.
Best computer voice ever, You know who! :stuck_out_tongue:
