[Bold numbers new]
We could post the actual play count numbers, too.

Valete,

If you make it three months instead of six, three more Grand Ole Party songs jump into the top ten. I love them.

“Two Coins”-Dispatch-176
“AM Radio”-Everclear-174
“Lovers in a Dangerous Times”-Barenaked Ladies-172
“The General”-Dispatch-171
“Under African Skies”-Paul Simon-171

“Love Is The Seventh Wave”-Sting-165
“Sweetest Thing”-U2-163
“End Of The Line”-Traveling Wilburys-162

This is more representative of what I listened to in high school, though, since everything else has had only two years to accumulate play count. I have a big old list of around 500 of my favorite songs that I play most of the time and add to and subtract from occasionally, so it takes a really long time for new stuff to get singled out for playing or put on the iPod enough times to make it to the top. I see that “The General” has fallen from top place, though- for the last three years or so it’s been on top, but I never single it out anymore.

*This may be the wrong artist. Google mostly has it listed as the Postal Service, though, which it’s definitely not. If anyone knows better, let me know!

All is Full of Love—Bjork—155
Hell (Live Version)—Tiger Lillies—150
Rock Shop (Main Theme)—Robocop soundtrack—114
Theme to “The Last Valley”—John Barry—105
Jisas Yu Holem Hand Blong Mi—Melanesian Choirs—104
Love Song for a Vampire—Annie Lennox—103
Ladies and Gentlemen we are Floating in Space—John Coxton—101
Not Gonna Get Us—T.a.t.u.—93
Prospero’s Speech—Loreena McKennit—83
I Can’t Stop Loving You—Ray Charles—83

With slight variations, I think this has been about the same lineup for the last five years…and a lot of the plays probably date from a few years ago, too.

Still my favorites, though. Huh.

I think these might be good starters for a “Byronic Moodiness” playlist, come to think of it.

  1. LCD Soundsystem - “Someone Great” (24)
  2. Jackie Lomax - “Sour Milk Sea” (21)
  3. David Bowie - “Suffragette City” (19)
  4. The Exciters - “Tell Him” (19)
  5. Guided By Voices - “Teenage FBI” (19)
  6. The Hollies - “Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress” (19)
  7. The Rolling Stones - “19th Nervous Breakdown” (19)
  8. Crowded House - “Weather With You” (17)
  9. The Essex - “Easier Said Than Done” (17)
  10. Cyndi Lauper - “When You Were Mine” (16)

No kidding - I listen to everything, honest!

  3. Rock and Roll Girls - John Fogerty
  4. Love Hurts - Nazareth
  5. Baby Baby - The Vibrators

  8. Do Ya - ELO
  9. Li’l Red Riding Hood - Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs
  10. I Ran - Flock of Seagulls

My most played list is kind of weird because I don’t use iTunes that often on the computer…it’s really just there because I need to put songs on my iPod.

  1. Never Wanted to Dance - Mindless Self Indulgence
  2. Redrum - Immediate Music
  3. Bleed It Out - Linkin Park
  4. Evening Wear - Mindless Self Indulgence

  6. Crash - Papa Roach
  7. Sexy! No No No - Girls Aloud
  8. Rock & Roll Queen - The Subways
  9. Fame < Infamy - Fall Out Boy
  10. What I Want - She Wants Revenge

Looking on my work computer…

  1. Must I Paint You a Picture? - Billy Bragg
  2. 9 Crimes - Damien Rice
  3. Tomorrow Wendy - Andy Prieboy & Johnette Napolitano
  4. Eyes Wide Open - The B-52’s

  6. Star Witness - Neko Case
  7. The Origin Of Love - Rufus Wainwright
  8. This Heart Attack - Faker
  9. One - U2
  10. The Magic Position - Patrick Wolf

… which is a lot different than what it would be at home, even though they’re essentially the same collection.

This reflects heavily the fact that I listen to techno when I’m writing…

  1. Orbital – The Box (edit) (a 4 minute section of a 28 minute song, which I find very compelling.)
  2. Orbital - Spare Parts Express

  5. Air - Cherry Blossom Girl
    6 - Don Huonot - Suojelusenkeli

“Step It Out Mary” --Boiled in Lead
“Have You Ever” --The Offspring
“Fireplace” --REM
"White & Nerdy* --Weird Al
“Turkish Song of the Damned” --The Pogues

Ok…I will probably date myself but here we go.

  1. Seven Nation Army - The White Stripes
  2. Take Me Out - Franz Ferdinand
  3. Oye Como Va - Santana
  4. What’s This Generation Coming to - Urge Overkill
  5. Sexy Back - Justin Timberlake
  6. White and Nerdy - Weird Al Yankovic
  7. The Distance - Cake
  8. Low Rider - War
  9. Everyday People - Sly and the Family Stone
  10. Evil Ways - Santana

hmm…How did Justin Timberlake get in there?

I love that song. It’s the closest thing my wife and I have to an “our song”. I listened to the Zero 7 album a lot when I went away travelling for six months and the lyrics of Destiny really resonated.

I’ve only had my iPod fo a month, and before that I used iTunes to make some playlists for our wedding, so this is not wholly representative:

Sweet About Me - Gabriella Cilmi
Soul Bossa Nova - Quincy Jones
Time to Pretend - MGMT
Ahprahran - The Sugargliders
I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor - Arctic Monkeys
Darkside Lightside - Ash (this is only here because I kept playing the last few seconds of it to adjust the “end time” to get rid of the silence before the hidden track)
I Want You Back - Jackson 5
The Ice Hotel - **Stacey Kent **(must be down to the missus as I don’t even know this tune…)
Sofa (of my Lethargy) - **Supergrass **(best title of the whole top 10!)
Other Side of the World - **KT Tunstall **(the wife again)

BTW I don’t understand people saying that their play counts don’t reflect what they play as they listen to most music on their iPods - isn’t the whole point that when you sync your iPod it updates the count? (My iPod Touch sometimes crashes and loses the info, which is annoying).

I think it must, which explains why almost all my Top 10 are Prince - he’s my go to playlist when I can’t think what I want to hear at work.

  1. Koushik, Battle Rhymes for Battle Times
  2. Roy Budd, The Final Option
  3. Boccherini, La Musica Notturna Delle Strade Di Madrid
  4. Snap Ant, Saviour Piece
  5. Daft Punk, Veridis Quo
  6. Guido & Maurizio De Angelis, Violent Rome
  7. Madvillain, Great Day (Four Tet Remix)
  8. Ulrich Schnauss, On My Own
  9. Kelpe, Quick Broken Harp
  10. Tindersticks, City Sickness
  1. Savin’ Me, Nickelback (102)
  2. Far Away, Nickelback (83)
  3. If Everyone Cared, Nickelback (75)
  4. Fall Into Sleep, Mudvayne (65)
  5. Follow you Home, Nickelback (65)
  6. Someone that you’re with, Nickelback (59)
  7. Valentine’s Day, Linkin Park (58)
  8. Rock Star, Nickelback (53)
  9. Fight for all the wrong reasons, Nickelback (50)
  10. Bleed it out, *Linkin Park *(48)

Anyone care to guess what my favorite band is?
