Having to no longer commute (100% WFH now), I no longer have a radio routine. But back in the day, I would tune into NPR. In general, I find I no longer listen to radio at all. Certainly not to music stations. When I’m driving for errands or pleasure, I prefer contemplative silence and the smooth rumbling sound of my engine & exhaust.
I used to sometimes listen to WXRT in Chicago though that was largely for host Lin Brehmer’s segments. Once they moved him to another slot, I didn’t have much reason to listen any longer although, to be honest, I had already largely migrated to listening off my USB stick or streaming before then.
I cancelled Sirius. Took me DAYS to do it… literally hours on the phone. Worse than cancelling a Gym membership. I almost had to cancel the card & tell them to “go scratch” for their auto renewal.
Regular radio isn’t so bad; it’s a lot less crowded these days. Also, I know who Howard Stern sends huge campaign contributions to … to support.
When I’m showering and getting ready for the day, I listen to the local all-news station (WBBM).
Since I’ve been working from home for the past year-plus, once I start working, I’m either continuing to listen to WBBM, or switching to using my Echo Dot to stream something; on the Echo, I rotate between NPR and several stations on SiriusXM (sometimes Symphony Hall, other times First Wave or Yacht Rock Radio).
Up until last year, it was Kevin and Bean on KROQ-FM (Los Angeles). Then Bean pseudo-retired (left the show so he could move to the UK), and 3 months later new management fired the rest of the show. I sampled various other shows for about 6 months (Nic Harcourt and Jet on KCSN is pretty good, but their signal sucks where I live, so I had to give up on that one).
I settled on CDs, audiobooks and borrowing albums through hoopla. Just finished up all of Van Halen’s catalog, now working my way though Led Zeppelin in chronological order. It’s funny, Zep was so prevalent on the stations of my teen years that I never saw a need to buy any LZ albums. There is stuff I’ve never heard in there, and some of it is quite good.
To wake up, I listen to a local station in CA, 101.1, because I can’t listen to people talk before I get out of bed, otherwise, their voices put me back to sleep. They primarily play Top 40.
Once I get into the car to commute for 30 minutes, I listen to Rob, Anybody, and Dawn on 98.5, as I enjoy their show (I download their replay in the afternoon on Itunes). I mix it with swapping over to the local traffic station 93.5 on the 10 minute marks to hear traffic conditions.
During the day, I listen to podcasts of the previous-day talk shows, Tom Sullivan in particular.
Driving home, its again 93.5 for traffic during my commute, or finishing up the podcasts.
During lockdown, I started listening to classical radio online again just to hear someone engaging with me in a somewhat conversational manner. Mostly WETA in D.C. and WFSQ Tallahassee (went to FSU and many long nights studying and listening to the station)
If I’m up on Sunday morning, I still try to listen to Breakfast with the Beatles on WXRT Chicago, sometimes the long commercial breaks are just too much.
I tell my google dot to play NPR (WSKG) while I eat breakfast, still NPR on the drive to the shop, at the shop I listen to a no-advertisement music radio station that switches to World Cafe in the afternoon.
My morning commute I listen to SiriusXM I switch it between Joe Madison on Urban View and Julie Mason on POTUS
Afternoon commute is Clay Cane on UV and Dan Abrams on POTUS.
I like Karen Hunter on UV too
Since I’m an incorrigible station flipper during commercials I listen to bits from PRX, MSNBC, Fox ( for balance lol) BBC and Bloomberg. As well as my fave music stations up and down the dial
During my commuting days, which may start up again in a couple of months, it’s all Sports Talk Radio in the morning. Specifically, the Sports Junkies on my local 106.7 The Fan.
Other times when I’m out and about it’s the local classic rock station.
Those are the only two stations I have saved on the pre-sets in my car.
I’m in the greater Dayton, Ohio area. On the way to work I listen to The Bob & Tom Show that’s carried on 104.7 WTUE. When a commercial comes on I’ll switch to local news on 95.7 WHIO. On the way home I’ll listen exclusively to the latter.
On the rare occasions I choose to listen to the radio, it’s usually Classical WETA. I can’t stand DJs who chatter, or commercials, or constantly repeated songs. This doesn’t seem to be an issue on my public radio station of choice. Mostly I hear it in the car, but since I’m retired, I don’t drive all that much.
My husband has SiriusXM in his car and I feel like all they play on The Bridge is Van Morrison and Jackson Browne - I hear the same few songs ever single time I go in his car. aaarrrgh!!
I only listen to podcasts and music that’s already loaded onto my phone. I can’t stand terrestrial radio. I don’t appreciate 30 minutes of commercials every hour.
I wake up to NPR’s Morning Edition on my alarm clock, and listen while I’m washing up/getting dressed. Then I turn on the radio in the kitchen and continue listening while I eat breakfast. Then if I’m actually driving to the office and not working I listen to yet more Morning Edition in the car. And if I am working from home I just leave the kitchen radio on and keep listening to NPR while I work.
Ive been listening to whole show replays of the Stern Show from 1994-2001. The breadth of the show was amazing. Politicians, musicians, moviestars, drunken dwarves, freaks and so much more. It was a wonderful mix of parody, sarcasm, current events and social commentary. Of course it could also be course and offensive.
