Favorite wildlife encounter of your life?
Walking through the woods on Amherst Island, Ontario, I ducked under a branch, and when I came back up, another branch barely arms length ahead of me, at eye level, a saw-whet owl staring peacefully back at me. Looked endearingly like a toy store teddy bear sitting on a shelf. Another step and I could have reached out and touched it.
Favorite food you can buy easily in any shop in some other country or region, that you’d love to get at home, but can’t.
I thought I saw some kind of mountain cat in my neighborhood, lounging in the tall grass next to an old barn alongside the street. I couldn’t find the species in online cat identifiers, and thought it might have been a semi-mythical North American Mountain Lion. Later, I saw pictures of red wolves and realized that was what I actually saw. The reason I thought it was a cat was because the wolf’s fur is what on the sides of its face, making it seem wide like a cat’s. Red wolves nearly went extinct in NC, and more were flown in to repopulate the species. I must have seen one of the new ones.
