Easy! Sweet potatoes, simply prepared by peeling and cutting into 2" pieces. They go into a baking dish with just butter, salt and pepper. Cover with foil and bake until tender. Remove the foil for the last ten minutes for a little bit of toasty goodness. No sweetener needed and NO XXXXING MARSHMALLOWS. A few shelled pecans are kind of nice though.
YMF - Stuffing (seasoned bread based goodness cooked inside the holiday bird) or Dressing (same thing cooked in a baking dish)?
Grandparents came over to our house for turkey dinner. Afterwards there was a Thanksgiving animated special on tv (something about a pilgrim mouse on the Mayflower) that I saw only that one time in my life (we had just purchased a second tv set! and dad could watch football in the other room). That evening, as a special treat my brother and I got to ride back with the grandparents and sleepover that night at their house.
I forget what it’s called but imagine the filling from a good turkey pot pie (chunks of turkey and veggies in a rich gravy) - serve this glop over fresh biscuits.
Don’t think I’ve ever had Thanksgiving ham, but sammiches is my go-to answer for leftover ham anyway. Either that, or chop it up and stir it through mac and cheese.
So I’d look for a small ham, which will likely be overlooked by those looking for big turkeys to feed a family. I have few family, and they live elsewhere, so I typically have a holiday meal by myself, and a small ham fits. Plus, I like it. Some potatoes and veg, and I’m a happy (and well-fed) guy.
I rarely watch it, but my wife’s high-school marching band marched in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade long ago, so I’ll say the cutest flutist from that band on that day.
Snacks and hors d’oeuvre go out before 10AM. Main meal usually hits the table before 1PM. Seconds and repeats continue until we can’t rise from lying on the floor. Every now and then a shaky hand will rise up and snatch a bite stuffing before vanishing back down. Sounds of gobbling, burping and collapsing organs soon follow. The someone says “Who want’s PIE?”
YMF non-potato vegetable on the Thanksgiving table?
