This question Inspired by theDo you get dressed on your day off?thread. A lot of people indicated they enjoy a day off in sweats, pj’s, or very very comfortable clothes. Maybe you’ve been outside working on the car or doing yard work.
Would you change into different clothes to go to the grocery store or other casual shopping?
My comfy clothes are usually my out and about clothes. Jeans and casual shirt. If I’m really being a slob, like board shorts or sweats, then yes, I would upgrade to jeans before going anywhere.
I don’t bust out my tiara but yeah, I definitely try not to look like I just rolled out of bed. I wouldn’t wear sweats anywhere - I don’t even wear them to the gym - and I sure as hell wouldn’t wear pajamas in public.
If the weather is colder and I’m wearing “fuzzies” at home then, yes - I’ll change before going out. The “fuzzies” I wear aren’t really fit for me to be seen in public in, as far as I’m concerned. If it’s warm out and I’ve been wearing shorts (with a t-shirt) then there’s a good chance (though not a certainty) that I’ll go out with same clothes on that I’ve been lounging at home in.
My pajamas are frilly pink things that obviously don’t belong in public.
In winter, I am likely wearing leggings and a sweater around the house. That’s fine for quick errands, especially since it will probably be covered by a coat. In summer I’ll have on an unstructured dress. Again, fine, though I might throw on a light sweater.
My dad always showered and changed clothes before going shopping or running errands. He expected me to do the same; if I went with him. I had a slovenly period in college and early adulthood where I’d run to the store with whatever I happened to have on. Never pj’s. But, sweats, gym shorts, cut off jeans etc. and on hot days just my white T-shirt (I dislike pulling on a outer shirt on hot days).
I started changing clothes to run errands before I turned 30. I guess my dad rubbed off on me after all. I still don’t *shave *just to go out shopping. A days stubble on my day off is to be expected. I don’t think the cashier at Krogers cares.
The thing I never understand is people wearing house slippers in public. I’ve never done that. I wouldn’t want to scuff up the soles by walking on asphalt and concrete.
Cut off jeans are not slovenly. If Lemmy can rock the cut off jeans we all can rock the cut off jeans.
Lemmy rockin the cut off jeans
I do change my shorts. At home I wear sweat shorts so I change into regular shorts to go out. Sometimes I might put shoes on instead of just the flip-flops.
The clothes I’ll put on are comfortable also, but I won’t wear my grass stained jeans I use for yard work to go out to stores in. I also have a really rundown pair of running shoes I use for yard work and for walking the dog (I spend a lot of time in the field) and I won’t wear them either. And never shorts.
But never mind the store - people seem to put on their comfy clothes to fly in. Yuck.
I’ve spent today in sweats and slippers. If for some reason I’d have to go out, I’d put on jeans and sneaks. If I was just running to the convenience store or the dollar store for a quick grab-n-go, I might just put on shoes and stick with the sweatpants. But for real shopping, I’d prefer to be semi-presentable.
The answer depends a lot on what type of store I’d be visiting. For a Wally-world run, if I wasn’t smelly or something wasn’t ripped, I’d just go as I am. Same for the feed store to go pick up dog supplies. On the other hand, if I were going to the mall, to the salon, to the bank or another place of business where people dress nicely, I’d do the same. A pair of slacks and a polo in the summer or a pair of slacks and a sweater in the winter. I don’t wear flip flops because I think they are a bit dangerous in crowds. People can and will stomp on your feet, or even on the back of the flip flop and unbalance you.
I only wear sweats or exercise shorts/tops if I’m running, playing tennis, around the house or on the trip to Wally-World.
I have “dressed” and “not dressed.” Meaning, I do have pajamas/loungewear that I might knock around the house in first thing in the morning, but once I shower and change, I don’t put something on that’s not suitable to wear out of the house. My typical outfit is jeans and a t-shirt, so not super dressed up but enough to run errands and such.
I have no problem going out to the grocery store in a long shirt, yoga pants, and a casual shoe. Is my ass covered? Is everything clean, am I non-sweaty, is nothing holey or ragged looking? Then I’m good to go.
I will not leave the apartment in pajama pants (even to run down the hall to dump the garbage). Those are at-home-wear only.
