Since alcohol consumption during pregnancy was brought up, it’s important to recognize that physically recognizable birth defects are only one extreme example of alcohol’s effect on the fetus. There’s a risk of less obvious damage (such as growth retardation and cognitive problems) than that seen in fetal alcohol syndrome. More here.
Some of the comments made in this thread (i.e. concerning the “War On Drugs”, “getting the government involved”, “reactionary hysteria” etc.) suggest that an underlying theme is disgust with laws and government policies on drug use.
I suggest that the most appropriate place for a demonstration against these policies is not the uterus during pregnancy.
Let the kid make his own statement when he/she comes of age.

Speaking generally, some of us believe that certain forms of child abuse are everyone’s business, not just the parent’s.
That said, those wishing to take steps should distinguish between constructive and nonconstructive intervention. They might also take a hard look at what they know --and don’t know-- about the underlying situation and assorted medical issues. There are other considerations.
