youtube - get your act together. (annoyed, but lame)

Why is it getting harder to find good content on youtube? Why don’t they clean up shit people post?

Increasingly, the top search results are stupid homevideo stunts, where someone at best does a lipsync or at worst actually do some kind of karaoke and butchers the song. Other times it’s just a still photo with the song playing, or someone filming a concert with camera phone. Worse - they display a photo from the original.
Earlier today I tried to be as precise as I could. I searched for Cameo word up original video, the resulting search page has the video as number 20, with crappy footage of live performances, Korn (for whatever reason I don’t get) and lipsyncing idiots.

And I looked for the video to demonstrate horrible 80’s fashion to my HS students.

You’re totally wrong.

The bright-red codpiece was fashion genius.

It’s called YouTube for a reason.

Welcome to both the brilliance and bane of YouTube–the ability for anyone, anywhere, to put up anything they want at any time. And since 90% of everything is shit…well, you wind up with a lot of shit.

I LOVE their version of the song. Thank heaven no one in the band wore that red codpiece, though…

Exactly. If you want edited content, go to a site with editors.

Wait, so you’re telling me a site which was originally created as a place for people to share their home videos is displaying a lot of home videos? CALL 911!

What I hate about YouTube lately is that it’s turning into Faces of Death On-Line.

I was reading about race-car drivers and, as usual, I turned toward the morbid and read about this guy Tom Pryce who was killed horrifically along with a track official in Europe some years ago. I’ll spare you the details – but the video of it is on YouTube.

So yes, I set myself up for seeing that gut-wrenching piece of footage. What surprised me was all the related videos of people dying in the most horrific ways. Maybe it’s not as bad as I think because I could only get myself to take a look at one and I clicked it off before anything disgusting hit the screen, but damn … isn’t there already a web-site dedicated to this kind of interest? Seems a little out of place on YouTube.

I’m in Yurp, so that’d be 112.

I don’t mind homevideos. I mind them being labeled as the real stuff.

As for the codpiece… I was thinking more of the hair.

Oddly, the first thing that came up on the results page for me was the Cameo “Word Up” original video, although the third one was more complete and better quality.

From the Onion News Network: YouTube Contest Challenges Users To Make A ‘Good’ Video

"At one point, it was believed that if one assembled a massive number of chimpanzees and kept them banging away furiously at typewriters, eventually they would produce Hamlet.

Now, thanks to the Internet, we know this is not so."

Youtube is essentially the same thing, only now you’re waiting for them to stage a full theatrical production.

I think the Internet needs to get its act together. Whenever I search for anything I just get a bunch of random crap people wrote, and not what I’m actually looking for. Why doesn’t someone delete the stuff that sucks?

So true. Having located a video on youtube depicting an unbelted driver being tossed around the vehicle during an accident, I ran across another video in the sidebar of a police freeway chase resulting in the driver of the fleeing SUV hitting the median, being thrown out of the car across the median, and run over in heavy traffic going the opposite direction. All filmed from a helicopter in shocking and completely unexpected detail. The first video was not really all that graphic, but the second video had a distinctive Faces of Death quality.

And to think that videos like that co-exist on the same site with videos of laughing babies and cute kitties is just plain odd.

You may very well be joking, but I’d subscribe to your newsletter.

Youtube doesn’t allow porn, so people naturally resort to posting the soft stuff.

I saw what you did there

I’ve got to say, I’ve never had any difficulty finding the genuine music video I’m looking for on YouTube. Maybe my tastes just aren’t rare enough.

The other thing is that official music videos and other copyrighted material is deleted whenever the copyright owner complains. So you’ve got lots and lots of covers, karaoke versions, and suchlike because they stay up and copyrighted material tends to be taken down.

You know what pisses me off? When I do searches for “cute kitties” or “laughing babies”, and don’t get any videos of people dying. TEH SUXORRRSS!!!
