You've just been banned from the Straight Dope. Now what?

I might actually get some work done for a change.

I often wonder what happens to guys like Diogenes the Cynic.
He was on here all the flippin time and had near 60,000 posts. Then it seems he had a bad week where he started acting pissy, got a little lippy with the mods, said “screw it, I’m out of here” and got himself banned.
Wonder what he’s up to these days?

I’d just be gone, life’s too short to care that much.

He moved to another board, vaguely referred to above, a board that prides itself on having very few rules, where he quickly found himself confined to a single forum for unruly posters. He has been banned from posting in all of the general forums there.

Hardly surprising. Many of his most vocal critics here are, or were, over there as well.

One word: Facebook.

I still lurk on afc-a, so I’d probably resume posting there if I didn’t just drop the whole thing.

I’d don a mask that covers my face, lurk about in the background, and occasionally drop a chandelier on the remaining posters.

It was a little more then him acting pissy for a week. But he just over at Giraffeboards now…in the box for doing the same crap.

Not sure what I’d do. While there’s a lot more on the Interwebs than there was 15 years ago, the decent places for intelligent online conversation seem to be (a) Facebook, and (b) the comments sections of other people’s blogs. I’m allergic to the former, and the latter go back and forth between being too easily trolled and too regimented.

It’s worth putting some attention into not being banned here. This really is a pretty good place to hang out, lots of other intelligent posters here with senses of humor almost as twisted as my own, and over the past decade and a half, I’ve got a history here, I know the posting styles of a lot of posters, and am not just an anonymous voice.

OTOH, if I did get banned, I wouldn’t want to lurk if I couldn’t post, and I doubt if I could get away with not having my sock recognized. So I’d probably throw in the towel and start posting on Facebook.

I would reveal my true form and extinguish the Sun.

If I got banned it would probably be because I was being a wanker.
So, as a wanker, I would sell my shares short. This would cause a selling panic and the price would go through the floor. That’s when I step in and buy all available shares. Now I’M the majority owner and YOU are taking orders from ME! That’s what I call a “win-win” situation.

At first I would be disappointed, but then I would vow to right the terrible injustice by secretly buying the SDMB as part of a hostile takeover, which I would triumphantly reveal at the annual SDMB board meeting before smugly telling the current ownership that they are the ones who are in fact banned. I would have them escorted out by security, give Cecil Adams (who the evil ownership has locked in a cage) a thumbs up, before kissing a girl with big hair as 80’s music plays and the credits rolled.

Then I’d strip the site for parts and sell it to the Chinese.

Edit: Goddamnit, Aquadementia! Way to steal my thunder! You are so banned when I take over.

I’d blame Marley, then cry.

Freaky!
But that’s electronic trading for you, sport. It’s all over in seconds. You snooze, you lose.

I mostly lurk anyway. Wouldn’t be a lot different.

I was going to say this, but then I realised I’d still be able to READ the Dope even if I couldn’t post in it. And so I still wouldn’t get any work done.

I chose “other”, because my actual choice is “don’t get banned in the first place”. It’s not like it’s just something that happens unpredictably out of the blue.

Do more productive work and enjoy life.

I put re-register… but, seriously, it’s not like you can get banned on accident, and it’s not like I’m the kind of person who would push it to that point. If I was getting warnings from mods and I didn’t like them, I’d either resolve the problem or move along long before it got to the point of banning.
