Ok, think “Day of the dead” or similar films. A huge zombie outbreak has happened. TV and radio will likely be out, you can see the zombies from you kitchen window, and you have no idea what the police and military are doing. Now the question is: what will you do to stay alive?
The world is exactly as it is now, ie if you have a bazooka in you basement than it may be a part of you survival plan, but if you dont have it today, you can’t “invent” it for this thread.
Where will you go? (or do you stay at home)
What will you bring?
How do you interact with other people?
etc.
Give me your thoughts!
(I’m sure you have already had a thread like this at one point, but I wasnt there so it was no good! )
Ok, I’ll post my plan. First thing I do is get me a blunt weapon from my home. I have nothing that would work great, but perhaps a leg from my kitchen table would be better than nothing, and maybe I could find something in the basement.
After that I would try to make my way to the grocery store, and get some supplies. After that, it’s off to work. That is about 5 kilometres away, I’d say, so would be one hell of a trip, but maybe if I ran all way I could make it. Zombies are slow, remember!
Once I’m at work I could just settle there for as long as my supplies last, since it’s pretty well protected, with steel doors and all. I just hope the power wont be out, or the locks might not work. I’ll see what supplies I could find in the cafeteria, and I’d remember to look out for the night guard, who might have developed a taste for human brains…
Most likely I would be dead within 100 metres of my front door though.
First things first, I find Mila Jovavich. If she proves unreliable, I surround myself with Dopers (the majority of which are smarter than me and therefore have brains that are tastier.) If that doesn’t work I will adopt the adage, if you can’t beat them, join them.
I live right behind a Safeway. I’m so grabbing my family and taking over that place. It’s got rolling steel doors (that are never closed, since it’s a 24-hour store) over the glass ones at front and only two other fire doors in the back, so fortifying it should be easy. I happen to know that this Safeway has an emergency generator in the basement (when the whole neighborhood lost power it still had coolers running), and it has gas pumps right out front (including the huge underground storage tanks). I should be good for heat, power, and food for months.
There’s a gunsmith four blocks away, so once we’ve secured the Safeway I’ll make a mad dash (via car, I’m not stupid) to the store and load up all the guns ‘n’ ammo I can haul. We can take turns sniping zombies from the roof and waiting for rescue. Failing that, we can at least make a stand long enough to scout out and find another safe place.
Of course, the first rule of zombie movies is that somehow, someway, the zombies will get you. So I’ll probably be dead or zombified before I can pull all this cleverness off. But hey, you asked
I don’t think with the supplies on hand I could suitably barricade the house. I think I’d take the family to the apartment building across the street and either find an empty upper floor apartment, or shack up with some other survivors who agree with my theory that there’s strength in numbers. There’s a grocery store right here so scavenging for supplies should be possible.
I have a mental image from one of the Simpsons’ Halloween episodes where the town “goes zombie”, and Homer at one point sees Barney walking around moaning with some guy’s severed arm in his mouth.
Homer: Barney… Not you, too! Barney (removes arm): I’m not a zombie. But hey, when in Rome…
I figure the safest thing to do might be to try to blend in, y’know?
…didn’t they try this tactic at some point in the movie Shawn of the Dead?
My own plan? Drive up to the hangar where I work, grab whoever’s there (maintenance techs), grab one of the bigger executive jets, and get into the air. That’ll give us time to think, a means of communication with the wider world, and sufficient distance away for when someone decides to cleanse the area. We’ll have to hope that the automatic landing systems are still active.
