Amercian Idol 3/27-3/28

Gwen Stefani coaches the kids singing songs from the 90s.

And she sings tomorrow, my name day! Coincidence??

Oh dear. I can't say I'm looking forward to this week. However, if I let myself off the hook and just go to bed early, I might find that I can live without seeing the rest of the season, and then what? Huh? HUH?

Argh, I have to work tomorrow (start time 4AM). I've been getting Wednesdays and Thursdays off for the past couple of months. Unfortunately I have to fill in for somebody

I might sneak a peek before I go to bed, though. Gwennie should be interesting.

I can't speak for the other "old fogeys" like myself who haunt these threads, but I for one am terrified of what is going to happen tonight ... mostly because I will probably know at least 50% of these songs, and I probably liked 25% of the original artists, and I will probably hate at least 75% of these versions. But I will watch anyway, because we old people need something to bitch about.

I'll have to record tonight's performance and watch later tonight or maybe even tomorrow. We might be putting an offer in on an acreage and our real estate agent (AKA "Dad") is coming over to work on stuff with us. I'm terrified.

I'm with you, Lib...the only thing I know about Gwen Stefani is that she looks a little bit like Madonna.

No, they won't be hers, they'll be '90s pop songs. Stefani's solo stuff is pretty recent anyway. Back in the '90s she was still with No Doubt. I'm sure I'll know most, if not all of the songs tonight. I graduated in '96.

Songs from the 90s!? That's great!

I hope they'll do "Bicycle Built For Two" and maybe "I've Been Working On The Railroad"! They probably can't afford the royalties for "Kathleen".

Heh. That would be hilarious. I wonder what Sligh would do to rearrange I Guess I'll Have to Telegraph My Baby?

"Dawg, these are classic songs. You should have just gone with the melody."
"I'm not familiar with the song, but you touched my heart."

Please humor me and pretend you mean that you graduated from college in '96, and not high school, so I can feel like we're the same age for a moment. OK? Thanks.

I dunno if I count as an old fogey or not, but I kinda stopped paying attention to current music in the late '80s, except for stuff that people recommended to me. So my knowledge of '90s music is very spotty, and stuff that was probably all over the radio I've probably never heard before.

The stuff from the 90's that I like (mostly hard rock and grunge) is all stuff they probably wouldn't do. The stuff they will do is likely to be all the radio pablum that I've tried to block from my memory. I know Stefani only as that chick who looks like Madonna.

I guess that explains Donna Summer. I didn't really like that. Sorry, Lakisha.

OK, I have two things to say about LaKisha: (1) that dress does nothing for you, girlfriend!, and (2) don't mess with Donna! I am not very happy with this performance; Donna Summer songs should be sung, not screamed. Rein it in a little, show some control. We already know you have powerful pipes -- how about a little nuance?

And I'm sorry, but that dress is horrible, and LaKisha should not be photographed from above at a close angle, because that mess? Is obscene.

Chris should do some aerobics training or not walk around so much. Justin calls this breathiness The Meatloafl Appeal.

I liked it and didn't notice a rhythm problem, I noticed a short of breath problem.

How does Chris front a band? He is completely and utterly incapable of keeping the beat. He's like the whitest boy who ever lived, and then some.

Plus, he wrecked a perfectly good Police song. I don't even want to get into it. What have the Police ever done to him? I can't even talk about it.

Plus, he has NO CHIN, and the so-called "soul patch" doesn't help. And what is this ridiculous talk about "staying in the pocket"? WE ARE SINGING, NOT PLAYING FOOTBALL!

Sligh does get ahead of the beat. That can be annoying for a band if they're always trying to chase the singer.

[slight hijack] So my boss was seated for dinner next to Paula Abdul at an event for Hillary Clinton this past weekend. He spent the first half of the evening pretending not to know who she was, and he said it seemed to be driving her absolutely crazy. She kept bringing up American Idol, and he kept playing dumb and changing the subject. A sample conversation:

Paula: So do you watch American Idol?
My Boss: No, I've never seen it. Do you watch it?
Paula: Actually, I'm involved with the show.
My Boss: That's nice. So why do you support Hillary?

Heh!

He finally fessed up about halfway through the event, and she cracked up. He said she's extremely beautiful, very intelligent (they talked a lot of politics) and has a great sense of humor. When I asked him if she partook in any alcoholic beverages, he said he never saw her drink anything besides water all night long. The only "inside scoop" he was able to get was the fact that she's trying to talk the producers into taking the show to New Orleans to showcase what's going on there since Katrina.

That's all. Nothing earth-shattering, or even very interesting. [/hijack]

I'm an old fuddy-duddy, so this past week was awesome because it was all songs I grew up with. This week will probably bore me to tears, as I know absolutely nothing about music of the '90s.

OMG, I have a girl crush on Gina. I love this song, and she's kicking the shit out of it. And she looks HOTT in this outfit. Love. HER! (Randy is right -- those are fly boots. I could never pull them off, but Gina can. I think I ... want to kiss her. What is happening to me?)

Her new haircut is really awesome, too.

Gina: another karaoke performance. The backup singers made her sound btter than she was. That was very, very average.

I can't stand this song, so maybe that clouds my judgement.

Holy crap. Sanjaya is rockin' a 'hawk.

his performance isn't bad either. I'd say he's the best of the night so far (which isn't saying much). He's the least boring, at least.

I wish I were so "homely."

What is going on with Sanjaya? Is he completely insane? This song has no melody and ... well, I like his jacket. I can't really think of anything else nice to say. He is SO WEIRD. That was horrifying. Honestly, the kid is at least six kinds of freak right now. There aren't even words in the English language, I don't think. Or in any other language I can think of.

Hmm, looks like Haley is rockin' Kat McPhee's extensions again. I like this song better when Cyndi Lauper sings it. Because she's so unusual. But Haley isn't. She's very Osmand-ish again. She bores me sometimes. Like tonight.

I'm kind of bored. Are we sure that Gwen Stefani was actually involved tonight? I don't really believe it.

Well, OK, that was distracting, at any rate.

I liked Phil better on this song before he got to the bridge, but I have to say, this was a good choice for him. I would like him a lot better if he didn't look like a schwa-headed alien who wants to eat my soooooooooul. But you gotta work with what you've got, I suppose.

I'm not as impressed with Melinda as I usually am, but she's still quite good. Not crazy about the outfit at all, tough. She looks like she's wearing one of my grandmother's ancient housedresses. (I know that Lilly Pulitzer is "in" again, but I don't give a crap.)

Big ups for being able to not only pull off the blue eyeshadow, but to actually look good in it. And her teeth are so very, very white.

You know, I just now realized that "American" is spelled incorrectly in this thread's title.

The giggles have worn off and now I'm bored. I expected more from both Melinda and Lakisha. With one notable exception, they all seem lackluster today. Maybe they all went out last night and are hung over.
