14 Stabbed at a Texas college.

Replace the term “X-Acto knife” with its effective twin, “scalpel” and it may be clearer what kind of damage it can do. They may be small for knives, but are extremely sharp.

Knives are complicated to take away from someone–more difficult than a gun, in many ways. They’re also more viscerally frightening to a lot of people: everybody knows a gun can kill them, but most have never felt what it’s like to get shot. It’s scary, but sort of abstract. Getting cut, on the other hand, is familiar enough for most people to extrapolate.

It’s Texas. Where were all the guns at?

This is bad of me but as a knife collector and illegal carrier, I would have “fared” much better than that maniac. He obviously was not schooled in the use of a knife. Or, he simply meant to terrorize and maim.

An accomplished knife wielder can kill a lot of unarmed people in a confined space.

If you loosen the clamp on the blade, I can imagine the little No. 11 blade staying in the body.

I’ll settle for that as long as it doesn’t hit a vital organ or the jugular.

Hey, I used to hang out around the Fry/Freeman area (Settler’s Village), probably not far from you depending on what part of Barker Cypress you are on. So we’ve almost crossed paths in the Panhandle and Houston area.

The report I just read was 2 critical, but certainly nothing like a gun could have done. Or even a bigger knife.

Thanks Bill “the Butcher” Cutting.

One of my favorite villains. I don’t carry that many knives. Just two or three.

“A knife? A fucking knife? Anyone who knows what they are talking about knows that’s an X ACTO X3602! Those morons in the media don’t have a clue what they’re talking about. They can’t tell a X3602 from a fucking knife. They should just keep their mouths shut and get some education. It’s because they’re afraid of knives, I tell you. Fucking knife-nabbers.”

Yeah. Whatever happened to “an armed society is a polite society”?

Local news reported he was going for throats and many of the wounds were to the face and neck.

Yep. We used those all the time in art class in high school and those things can cut like a motherfucker.

As a graphic designer, I know exactly the kind of damage they can do. Its too bad that there weren’t more art majors on the scene because the only way to stop a bad guy with a penknife is a good guy with a penknife.

Heh, Obama is stupid, that’s for sure. Lolz!

Sure was a good thing he didn’t have a gun, wasn’t it?

Unless it changed in the last couple of days, it is illegal to carry a concealed handgun in Texas while on a college campus. Even if you have a CCW. A quick look showed that a bill to change that was still in committee a couple of weeks ago.

Right, so let’s look at this logically. According to the CDC, in 2010 there were 2.4 million deaths in the US (NOTE: all numbers rounded). Homicide accounted for 16,000, homicide by gun 11,000, homicide by assualt weapon 600. On the other hand, suicide accounted for 38,000 deaths. Vehicle accidents accounted for 35,000. Diabetes took 69,000.

Homicides in general and gun homicides in particular get the bullk of the attention. Mass killings get the most press of any, in spite of the fact that in every year since 1980 homicides with 3 or more victims account for less than 1% of murders. If we really want to make an impact we should concentrate on suicides and preventable diseases like diabetes. Either one of those would have a much greater impact on the actual death toll. Not nearly as controversial, though.

Someone running with a smallish knife in his hand just looks like someone running - an Xacto isn’t exactly easy to spot. Most people wouldn’t see anything strange until he started going for their faces.

I know a guy who got knifed in the thigh once during a bar fight; he’d thought it was a strange spot for the other guy to punch him in until someone else noticed the blood.

As soon as I saw this story, I knew that the gun fetishists were going to be estatic. Now, if only someone would stab a bunch of children they can go back to being the weird little creeps with their metal penises in peace.

Of course, this is a) very rare and b) not terribly deadly, so if I have to choose between little weirdos with knives, or little weirdos with guns, I’ll take the knives. Don’t lose hope gun fetishists, if anything, kniver are more phallic than guns.
