I know it’s a different culture, but I’m still shocked when stories such as this come up, displaying how they treat one another.
Damn! I likes sharp tongued women. Different culture, nothing. Someone pissing you off isn’t a justifiable excuse for killing them.
That story almost made me cry. Every once in a while I forget just how shitty people can be and this certainly reminded me.

This is just one reason why I don’t buy the whole “The moralities of one culture is neither better nor worse than those of others” worldview. Some acts are just wrong, regardless of which culture perpetuates it. Sometimes, the culture itself is just plain wrong, and this is a perfect example.
Does it make me a terrible person if this made me think of Shannen Doherty found guilty of bitchery and sentenced to burn at the stake? It does, doesn’t it?

The vagueness of the article confused me - why was the girl in jail in the first place? Does anyone have a link with some more details? 
Someone* at Fark, where I first saw the story, read between the lines and posited that she wasn’t executed for having a sharp tongue – she had been raped and was tried for adultery. The Judge took offence at her defence of herself as she was unable to get a lawyer and pursued her execution with fervour.
It doesn’t make the story any better (if anything, worse) but it does flesh out exactly why she was on trial in the first place.

AFAIK, this happens not unfrequently in Islamist countries.
I get so damn disgusted with these people! How anyone can just write this kind of crap off as “just another culture” is beyond me. When is the world going to rise up and start bringing pressure to bear on these barbaric, chauvinistic counties to drag their asses into at least the 19th century! I suppose we can take heart in the fact that (it appears, at least) her own family didn’t kill her.

If it had she wouldn’t have been tried. In order for it to be rape there need to be four Muslim male witnesses to prove that she didn’t instigate it.

But before we (in the US) get on our high horse, remember that a lot of European countries consider us barbarians for still having the death penalty.
Killing a little girl for a “sharp tongue” or killing a (perhaps innocent) person who may have had an incompetant lawyer and a jury of idiots. Who are the scum now?
Might be wise to re-consider the death penalty in the US before we start condemning it in other countries for what they consider heinous crimes.

I’m against the death penatly but "tis a stupid hijack anyway. It’s quite easy to be pro death penalty and against trying 16 year old rape victims as adultress’ with the death penatly if they’re guilty.

Any country that can’t make the distinction between killing an innocent teenager who had been raped (although of course it apparently can’t be proved because the rapist wasn’t kind enough to do it in front of four Islamic men) and killing someone who has deprived another human being of his life (not to mention the pain and agony inflicted on the family members and loved ones of the one who got murdered) isn’t worth paying the slightest attention to, in my opinion!
And secondly, are you saying that they consider it a “heinous crime” to be raped (or apparently even worse, get lippy with a judge)? And that before we have the moral standing to say anything about it, we better do away with the death penalty?
I’m sorry, and I’m sure you’re a good and kind-hearted person, but bullshit!!! I, for one, am in favor of the death penalty and I certainly intend to condemn the hell out of any country that allows this idiotic kind of shit, and I’ll feel perfectly justified in doing so. Despite what the truly enlightened Europeans think (and remember, their present abhorrence of capital punishment is a fairly recent occurrence; their history of capital punishment far predates this country and was eliminated only in the last few decades) there is absolutely no correlation in barbarism between killing a murderer and killing a sixteen year old girl for being raped. Like I said, I’m sure you’re a good person, but give me a fucking break!!!
Too many people are too worried about being called bigots, or insensitive, or ignorant about other cultures, and are afraid to speak up and condemn this shit and make it known that it is unacceptable under any circumstances, no matter who does it or what religion is involved.
Well, I’ll use this as my own test of muticulturalism. I’ve have it beaten over my head for 20 years that we must never judge someone else’s beliefs. After all, I could never understand the complexities of a foreign culture and their social norms, so I should never judge.
Kill away, I’m not supposed to have an opinion of this as long as it’s a culture I don’t fully understand. (And especially if it’s a Middle Eastern culture) Being an American, I’m wrong in my opinion anyway. And probably to blame somehow.
