I hate it when I talk to this friend of mine and he’s telling me about the lottery. He’ll tell me how his number “almost” came out: “I had the five, but the six came out. Can you believe how close that is?” I try to explain that the six is no “closer” to the five than a twelve, twenty, or forty-eight would be, that it’s all the same probability. He just says, “But six is so close to five. I came THIS CLOSE to winning!” The same is true for cards, according to this guy: “Ooh, I got an eight. That’s SO CLOSE to the nine I needed.” Ugh.
And I REALLY hate it when someone is trying to be funny by singing the theme from “The Love Boat,” but they get the lyrics wrong. (I’ve heard many different people do this exactly the same way.) Invariably, they put on their best cheesy lounge-singer voice and bellow, “Love…always excititing and new.” I want to shout, “There’s no ALWAYS in there! It’s 'Love, exciting and new,” that’s it!
OK, I feel better now. Any other (possibly completely unrelated) pet peeves out there?
