That’s ok, Mrs. Cake. If you don’t lose, I’ll just eat you.
God, I miss cake.

God, I miss cake.
If you can’t have a beer while walkin’ ‘round the Renaissance Faire in a tight bodice, where’s the joy in livin’?
Yeah, seriously ma’am, change your user name. Posting in a weight loss thread with a name like Mrs. Cake is just mean.
Women’s sizes make absolutely no sense to me. I’d’ve assumed someone at your weight would be around a 10 as I weigh ten to fifteen pounds more than you and am currently wearing 34 pants and a 15 (medium) shirt but, thinking about it, a female friend of mine weighs about the same as me and is wearing L to XL tops.
Approximately how much would a woman wearing “medium” weigh? And what numbers would those correspond to?
Monday weigh in : 204.4
Lost 1.7 lbs. this week even with my misadventures at the state fair.
That crosses me over the 20 pound mark! Yay me!
They don’t make sense to me either, and I am one. I’m in a 16-18 (bottom), and I’m 10 pounds or so more than Baker. It completely depends on your height.
Hey all. I lurked in the September thread and I think I’m ready to join the club. I started a new exercise regimen a few weeks ago and for the first time in years have actually been sticking to it. I started out walking on the treadmill for 20 minutes that first week and have been working my way up. Last week I walked 30 minutes Monday through Thursday with Friday off because I went to my nephew’s football game (where I actually did quite a bit of walking). Saturday my dog and I walked the 2.2 mile bike trail by my house and yesterday I walked on the treadmill for 45 minutes while watching the Vikings get their butts kicked.
I haven’t lost any weight yet but I definitely feel more toned than I did a month ago. I guess I’m not overly concerned with the weight but rather how I look and feel. I want to be healthier, and if some weight falls off in the mean time, that’s awesome. I’m 5’9" and at 185 right now. Ideally I’d like to be 150 (size 8 for me) but I’d settle for 165 (size 10). Right now I’m in about a 12 but still wearing some of the 14s (very loose) that I grew into last winter. So that’s positive at least.
I don’t diet, but I do try to eat healthy foods. I’ve watched my dad yo-yo diet my whole life and refuse to be that person. All it’s done for him is make him fatter.
So … that’s about it. We’ll see how it goes!
I’m 5’4", 141.5 lbs (down from 172!)
I wear a medium, small, and the ocassional extra small. I have pants & skirts in sizes from 6-10 (most are 8’s, but they ALL fit). Women’s sizes don’t really correspond to measurements, even though I think they’re supposed to. For sweater-knitting purposes, my bust measurement is 35, which usually corresponds to a small or medium size depending on the fit of the sweater, just to give you some perspective. I don’t know my other measurements.
Different brands run in different sizes, and different cuts in the same brand will fit differently. I need to go up a size if I want lower cut pants.
And what I forgot to say, don’t forget about muscle mass when thinking about weight vs. clothing size. A woman who is less muscular than me, but the same weight & size, would probably wear a bigger size. If she’s more muscular, smaller sizes. Ditto if she’s larger busted, or larger framed.
Yep. There are lots of things to consider. Even at my smallest, there’s no way in hell I’m ever squeezing into a small. My shoulders, breasts, and large rib cage dictate that I will never wear anything smaller than a medium. When I was a size 6 I still wore medium or large tops. Right now I wear a large in some brands and XL in others. I’m also long-waisted and have long arms. Sometimes those two things alone cause me to go up a size.
Welcome to the club yellowval. Good luck with your losing!
So, I’d like to join. Last week, I saw the registered dietician at my endocrinologist’s office (I’m hypothryoid) in the hopes that she could kick start me. I’m at the highest weight I’ve ever been, except when I was pregnant. Today was the first day of following my new food plan . . . and I’m really hungry. I hate diets.
I used to exercise regularly but got out of the habit when work was stressing me, so she put my plan in the following order: (1) Exercise; (2) Reduce calories; (3) Balance protein and carbs; (4) Better food distribution. I was eating way too much for breakfast, and way too many carbs. My mom has diabetes, so I have an increased risk for insulin resistance. Damnit, I love carbs.
The new plan: Using the diabetic exchange lists (you can see one here (pdf)): http://www.perinatology.com/Nutrition/EXCHANGE%20LIST.pdf#search=“diabetic%20exchange%20list”) I have to balance protein and carbs. I have 3 exchanges (45g) of carbs at breakfast with 1-2 protein exchanges (7-14g). At lunch, it’s 2-3 protein exchanges to 2 carbs, and dinner is 3-4 protein exchanges to 2 carbs. I can have 2 snacks, about 60 or so calories, with 1 carb.
Breakfast is the hardest. I was already close to the proper lunch and dinner portions, but I was overdoing breakfast. I did 40 minutes on the treadmill this morning. And now I’m hungry and snack time is 30 minutes away. Ugh.
So, for the numbers: Last week, I weighed 204 at the docs, down to 199.4 this morning at home (probably just due to a different scale). I’d like to get to 130 eventually. This is going to take a while.
I’d like to join too. I’ve got the exercising part down, but the food part is throwing me off.
For exercise, I row about 8km four or five times a week, erg* 6km three times a week, and erg 2km once a week.
I started that about three weeks ago and so far have managed to gain myself three pounds. I’m pretty sure that’s mostly muscle mass though. I have been eating more too, but I figure I do need more than the 1400-1600 calories a day I used to eat. It’s just so hard to control my intake now. When I started really working out, my attitude became “All this exercise must be burning tons of calories; I can eat as much as I want!” I have a feeling that might not be the best attitude to have.
I have been backing off the food recently though and only eating when I’m actually hungry. Most of the time. (I have an extremely difficult time turning down salt and vinegar chips.)
*to erg=to use an indoor rower (aka an erg)
Khadaji, thanks! It will be nice to have this extra support. My husband is pretty supportive about my new routine, but he doesn’t really think I need to lose any weight. Compared to him, I’m a dainty little flower.
Ceejaytee, I’m hypothyroid too, so I’ll be particularly interested to hear how your new diet & exercise plan works out.
Seren, I’ve actually gained three pounds since I started working out too. I’m also pretty sure it is muscle that I’m gaining. I haven’t had too much trouble with eating more yet. My lunch usually consists of a lettuce salad wrap with about a cup of lettuce on a burrito shell and topped with low-fat dressing, a bit of shredded cheese, pickles, and a sprinkling of Bac-Os. They’re pretty much my favorite thing in the world. Yep, I’m weird. Then I have about half a cup of fat-free plain yogurt with applesauce on top. For dinner I eat whatever sounds good, but try not to go overboard. Last night I was naughty and had my homemade scalloped potatoes & ham (made with heavy whipping cream and half & half). I cannot buy potato chips or I will eat the whole bag. They’re my biggest weakness.
**Ceejaytee, Seren, **welcome aboard! Good luck with your losing.
Oops. Sorry about the name. Back when I originally signed on it was to post in a Discworld thread and all the good women’s character names were already taken. Any suggestions on a new handle? Since nobody knows me yet, it would minimalize the inevitable shock and disorientation if I change it now rather than after my post count goes up to, say, 60.
Weighed in - lost 3 lbs. Was pretty happy until my husband weighed in - he lost 5 lbs. Damn guy metabolism. I was glad just to see the numbers go down a bit. No celebratory pizza yet, though.
Can’t really remember exactly where I was when I posted last, but I’m right around 162.4, which is approx 31lbs less than my starting point last May. I was just on vacation all of last week, where I kept my eye on my eating (everything in moderation!) and tried to get exercise in when I wasn’t already running around, and I didn’t lose any more weight, but I didn’t gain either! Maybe that blip in my diet will help keep my metabolism running now that I’m back to my eating/exercise routine.
One of my main goals was to surprise my family with my weight loss. It was funny: at first a few of them didn’t say anything because we’re one of those families that doesn’t point out weight loss (or gain) too much- I guess we had it drummed into us that it’s rude to comment, so I was a bit disappointed, but after I brought it up, those people admitted that yes, they were definitely surprised. And my mother, who has probably never, ever, ever, ever said this to me before, said, “I am so proud of you.” and even e-mailed a few days later to tell me again how proud she is. Whoa. Now THAT is a big deal.
Yay me!
Darn another hamster eaten post.
I took the kids for a quick 1.5 mile walk and I had a good day with the diet part.
I hope I am back on track again.
Jim
Yay you!
