I follow a low GI diet and it’s the best thing that has ever worked for me. So much like real life eating (instead of drinking meal replacement drinks that really don’t educate your eating habits).
Isn’t that the best feeling? My Dad, who is not one given to hand out compliments 99.9999% of the time, told me that I was looking much trimmer and the hard work I’m doing is really paying off. That was incredible to hear. Also, he and my eldest sister were visiting family the other day and he said that she was telling them how much she admired my tenacity, discipline and self control that meant that I was really eating so healthily, looked so good and was going to the gym at 7.00 am every weekday morning. That was really great to hear too - you know the way people may never give you a compliment but when you hear it back that they were telling people they were proud of you, well it just feels so good.
I’m at 184 this morning, lowest ever as an adult.
cheers!
Yay Ginger!
I over did the walking about Chicago yesterday. I am paying for it today with sore upper calf muscles and a blister on each foot. I did get another 10 miles in however.
Jim
Good work, Jim!
I strained a muscle in my thigh, the top one - quadricep - and then proceeded with my body sculpting class. Am I stupid? Yes? OW.
Time for me to quit lurking (now that I’ve actually paid up) and join the club.
First, kudos to everyone who has lost, or lost & gained but is back in here fighting the good fight.
Today I started the South Beach diet along with my husband (which will help enormously). We decided on SB because his family has a history of heart disease and I have relatives who have developed diabetes, so the plan looks good for both of us. We have friends who have lost and maintained on it, so with any luck… I also thought it looked more promising because there is less calorie and portion obsession and more emphasis on what foods to eat and how to make adjustments for our own metabolisms and nutritional requirements.
I’m at 181 lbs, age 44, height 5’5", sturdy build, aiming for my dating weight of 130-135, long lost in the mists of time. The initial challenge is losing the bread cravings and giving up wine for the first few weeks. I understand that the cravings disappear very quickly if you stick to it.
My husband is 196 lbs, 5’9’, age 45, stocky build, aiming for 165. He’ll be running and engaging in swordplay, I’ll mostly be hiking, using light weights, and hitting the treadmill.
So, here goes the great experiment - lose 50 lbs (and 10 years), and fit back into single digit size jeans for the first time in 12 years by next summer.
Today, and for the next 3 weeks, Phase I - no starch, no sugar, no alcohol, one caffeine drink per day, lean meats, 2% milk cheese, all the veggies I can stand, beans okay, some nuts okay. After 3 weeks, add back in some fruit and a couple servings of whole grains a day. Continue until svelte and gorgeous.
Here’s hoping!
Welcome, Mrs. Cake, and good luck!
(I want to eat you up!)
Welcome **Mrs. Cake. **Good luck losing!
Ginger, good for you!!
Mrs. Cake, welcome!
Look, everyone! Norine (EW) killed the thread!
[talking thread]I’m not dead yet.[/talking thread]
If we all clap our hands will the thread live?
Meh, meh, meh, look who knows so much! Turns out our thread here was only mostly dead.
In the interest of keeping the thread alive at least long enough for me to post my first week progress report next Monday, I’ll add my two back-up weight loss schemes, in case this one doesn’t work.
-
If I have not lost at least 15 lbs by the end of the year, I am resolved to divorce my beloved husband, which will a) make us too depressed to eat, b) make us too poor to buy food, and c) when we can buy food and eat again, we’ll eat like bachelors (i.e. bowl of Cheerios over the sink is dinner).

Wait for my fibroids to reach basketball size before having them removed. At least my stomach will be flatter.
So, I really, really feel motivated to stick to South Beach.
And thanks for the greetings everyone. Sorry I helped kill the thread.
No sense worrying about that. I’ll be starting the October thread on Saturday evening or Sunday morning.
Noooooooooooooo!!! It can’t die. I’m weighing myself tomorrow and I wanted to tell you all (if you’re interested that is!)… keep it going until tomorrow anyways!
No worries. Just tell us in the October thread. I always put a link to the new thread in the old ones, so it will be easy to find.
Well, after essentially flushing a three-month membership on eDiets down the tubes (Newsflash! Diets don’t work if you don’t follow them!), I joined WW online. The points method is, alas, very familiar territory for me and pretty ingrained in my brain (e.g., I’m really good at accurately estimating portion sizes!)
I’m also trying to get my exercise routine ramped up to my pre-“things fell apart” condition – walk first thing in the a.m. (goal is 2 miles in 30 minutes) every day, strength training with weights two days a week followed by a mile-and-a-half walk in the arboretum, Pilates two days a week.
Had a quintessential “Mom on WW” experience. I bought a fairly pricey bag of WW 2 point bagels (6 to a bag), and I got exactly one of them. My son snarfed down the rest!
