Seems like I have my sites set on fewer films this year compared to last. What am I missing on my radar?
The Fountain Darren Aronofsky’s next flick. He’s been compared to Kubrick, but I think he has yet to prove himself. Loved Pi & Requiem for a Dream; I really have my hopes up for this one.
Zodiac by David Fincher. The man has yet to let me down. Although it’d be nice to see him do something other than a crime/thriller for a change, he’s just so damn good at it. I wanna see some real science fiction from this guy (I don’t really count Alien 3).
Lady in the Water . M. Night Shyamalan. The trailer is pitch perfect. I think he might have a winner here. And let’s hope he can start to pull away from his trademark “twist” endings. He doesn’t need those gimmicks anymore.
Cars by Pixar. Sigh… but i think this might turn out to be their worst yet. But that’s like picking the worst Coen film… it’s all relative. Anyway, I’m a huge Pixar fan, so consider my breath bated.
V for Vendetta. Ok I’m a little nervous about it being moved from it’s (more appropriate) November release. And I’m not sure if I’m nervous because it was bad and needed fixing or because it was good and they’re spending four months screwing it up (ie making it more commercial). But the trailer looked good, dammit. And Winston Smith on the other side of the telescreen, I’d go just for that.
The Libertine. Did this already come out in the UK? I’m confused. But at any rate it seems to be coming out in 2006. And involves John Malkovitch, and Johnny Depp as a depraved bisexual poet. Who makes out with Rupert Friend. Actually I might have to wait for the DVD and a private moment at home before I watch that one.
Yeh! John Carter of Mars… Favreau is helming that now. I’m interested to see how he’s gonna bring that one to screen, because I thought Zathura was |<–this close–>| to being a piece of crap. Bringing that book to life is gonna take some VISION. I’m just not sure it’s his speed, but he seems to think so. I hope it’s epic.
I completely forgot about V For Vendetta. I think it’s gonna be killer. Written by the Wachowski brothers, too.
The X3 trailer really got me interested. The first one was okay, but the second movie felt fully realized. I figured X3 would take a step backward, due to the debacle that happened before production, but it seems like it’s on track. Love the shot of the Archangel, with his wings jutting out.
The Fountain - A friend of mine is the Supervising Sound Editor for this film and he tells me it’s going to absolutely rock (he won’t give me specific details, I think he can get sued or something). He’s doing some cool shit on this film, dialogue recording wise, so I’m very excited.
Lady in the Water - I like M. Night and I love Paul Giamatti.
Superman Returns - I’m a big Brian Singer fan and I’m praying for a good superman movie.
X Men 3 - I’m not a huge Brett Ratner fan but the trailer looked pretty cool.
The Inside Man - Denzel usually has pretty good taste and I dig Spike Lee.
American Dreamz - The trailer amused me and I’m starting to hate the show it’s a satire of (used to like it) so this could be just what the doctor ordered. It has a pretty good cast and Paul Weitz has a decent track record.
The Da Vinci Code - The trailer looked pretty good and I’m a pretty big Ron Howard fan. Plus Audrey (Yum) Tautou is in it.
Evan Almighty - I don’t think Bruce Almighty needs a sequel but Steve Carell is in it and he has to build an ark. I think it might be funny, I could be wrong.
Marie Antoinette - Sofia Copolla seems to know what she’s doing, plus I love this type of thing.
The Rum Diary - it’s based on a novel by Hunter S. Thompson and is starring Johnny Depp. 'Nuf Said.
I anxiously await any Tom hanks movie and there are four movies starring him that say 2006 in IMDb but I doubt they’ll all be released this year (if any). They are: Charlie Wilson’s War (2006), The Risk Pool (2006), A Cold Case (2006), The Great Buck Howard. Naturally I’m excited about all of these.
Wouldn’t The Da Vinci Code count as a 5th movie staring Hanks, in that case? Thems a lot of movies.
I’m excited about Hostel. I used to love those kinds of twisted horror movies as a kid… but as an adult they always seem to unsatisfy. Cabin Fever came close to that Evil Dead kinda feel… let’s hope Hostel kicks-ass.
The Last Unicorn. One of my all-time favorite fantasy novels. It’s a law of Hollynature that great books are easy to ruin for the screen, but this on has Christopher Lee as King Haggard so it can’t be that bad. [crosses fingers, toes and earlobes]
Thomas Jefferson said of Marie Antoinette, “She is extravagant. She has no other vices or virtues worthy of mention.” Yeah, Dunst* could pull that off easy!
*My personal goddess. But not entirely for her acting ability.
