The debates about drafting Raji on the Browns board usually came down to him being inflexible - he’s a pure nose, 0 or 1 technique - so we’d have to move Shaun Rogers to DE. We couldn’t flip them around situationally or have Raji start at DE. They may be wrong, but there are some very knowledgable draft nuts on those boards.
Mel Kiper makes a very healthy income from ESPN plus all the extras he sells; I’d bet he makes seven figures a year, every year. Scouting directors for NFL teams make much less, and they routinely lose their jobs when a new GM is hired, even if they did their job well and the players were screwed up by bad coaching.
Kiper would be a fool to take a job with a team.
Yeah, you’re right. I just don’t like him a lot right now because he’s dogging my team.
Fair enough. Too much Kool Aid and Raji was starting to look like the second coming. I think Pickett will be much more likely to move to DE on certain downs if they need it than Raji.
I wonder if he’ll be able to find a good dealer in GB, though.
How many teams in the 15 to 25 range were looking to trade up as high as 7 so we could have got him cheaper? I don’t think he would have made it to our pick at 40 so we had to draft him at 7 or trade back to a reasonable pick. Once Sanchez was gone it didn’t seem like there were many wanting to move up that high.
To my mind, it’s poor drafting to set your sites on ONE GUY and do everything it takes to make sure that guy is on your team.
I do have some sympathy. The Packers gave away their two third round picks to move up and grab a guy they clearly love to death. But at least they were smart enough to grab a different guy at 9, and then move back up into the first to grab the guy they covet, rather than grabbing Matthews at 9.
I understand, but he’s not dogging your team because it’s personal animus, he’s arguing that they made bad picks. When the consultant tells you your business is losing money because of an incompetent CEO, he’s not dogging you; he’s giving you the expert advice you asked for.
And you do have an incompetent CEO. Sorry man, but the Raiders are not gonna contend as long as Davis is alive.
And the Jets trade up to start Day 2. How very interesting. I’m guessing Andre Brown.
Damn, Kiper likes our draft (and I think I heard him say Raji has the flexibility to play DE too). Now I’m worried.
Nope, Shonn Greene. Meh.
I like the Lions getting more picks to fill more holes. Good for them.
I agree. The first day has the most intrigue, but the second day is where teams are made. There are still some interesting propositions out there, too.
Damn, there goes one more of my guys, Alex Magee. Chiefs building their D Line solidly.
And the Bears get … Jarron Gilbert. Fuckers. Nice pick.
Watch out, swimming pools.
Solid pick, though. As I type out the words “What in the fuck must be wrong with Michael Johnson”, I erase them as the Bengals pick him.
We got the dude who jumped out of the pool!!
I really don’t know the scouting report on this guy, but all accounts are that he’ll be a pretty good pro. I’ll have to start checking out some video on him, but at the moment I’m pretty pleased with the choice. I’m a bit surprised they went with him over Michael Johnson because the Bears pretty openly coveted him in the predraft process. Though, the same was said about Massaquoi and that turned out to be a total smokescreen. Perhaps the interest in Johnson was equally fictional.
I’m glad they went with a pass rusher. We really needed one, but it surprises me that we are waiting on S and WR. Based on all accounts the Bears expected to rely on the guys they had in house to produce better this year under Marinelli’s tutelage but as with everything with the Bears it might have been bullshit.
Now I start my day-long pining for Patrick Turner and hope they stumble into a productive S.
Bolding mine.
I’m sorry, but I laughed. I’ve got no room to, but I did anyways.
I’m not saying I buy it…just that it’s been widely reported as the strategy. The guy is said to be a first rate motivator, even as the Titanic was sinking in Motown his players stuck by him to a man. Certainly Tommy Harris, Alex Brown and Mike Anderson could use a kick in the pants.
I’m a little surprised the Jets traded up for Greene. Seems like they might have fallen in love with him as they slept. Was it really that likely he’d be drafted in the 9 picks they jumped up? Looking at the teams drafting in there RB isn’t a need.
…As the 49ers take a running back. Heh.
If I were a sports agent, I would have my guy find something, anything out of the ordinary that my guy can do. The buzz that video created for him moved him up draft boards.
I think the knock on Michael Johnson is that he has never lived up to his physical attributes and he’s soft against the run. If he actually puts it all together, he could be great, but he’s never dominated like he should be able to.
Figures. Anyone you want me to start talking about before the Lions pick? I seem to have an innate ability here…
