2009 NFL Draft Day Conversation

Has NFL network day 2 coverage been more commercial than coverage? The ESPN tracker makes a sound when someone has drafted, it seems like every pick has been made during a commercial.

Giants grab WR Ramses Barden. One of my hopes for the Bears, bummer. This is earlier than I expected him to go especially with Juaquin Iglesias on the board. I guess that run on WRs pressured the Giants into that move. I like him in that offense if Nicks is a bust.

ETA: The Bears HAVE to take a WR with the 99th pick at this point, don’t they?

Fuck me! The Dolphins take my guy again! Turner comes off the board. This is not panning out well at all.

Another shot across the bow: Patrick Turner, receiver from Southern Cal comes off the board. Getting nervous yet?

Awww there goes Patrick Turner. Sorry Omni.

Two guys I really like (considering the Packers don’t need another WR) are still left in Brandon Gibson and Quan Cosby. But what surprises me more is that there is still a ton of talent there for guys who AREN’T WR’s. Meredith. Sidbury. Andre Brown. And the TE’s

Keep falling guys. Keep falling…

Rashad Johnson is the guy who needs to go soon, he’ll be the Bears pick if he’s still there. Not sure any of the WRs left are good values now.

I hope the Browns not drafting a RB in the first 3 rounds means Jerome Harrison is going to get a shot at starter for the Browns. He got 2-3 carries per game under Crennel because for some reason Crennel despised him. He’d come in, turn what should’ve been a 4 yard run into a 12 yarder and he wouldn’t be seen again. He had a 70+ yard TD run during last season with one of his 2 or 3 carries and Crennel had this disgusted look on his face like “now how am I gonna justify not playing him?” - we barely saw him for the rest of the year and it turned out to be the last touchdown scored in the season… in game 10.

If Mangini gives him a fair chance and he’s the primary carrier, he’ll run for 1400 yards this year. You heard it here first.

Kiper had some actual analysis I agree with. I don’t think I’ve seen a draft in recent memory with so many reaches in the third round. And, there goes another. Who the hell is Ledarrious Webb and why is he going before Moore, Byrd, Washington, and Francies?

And now it’s the CB run.

Odd draft.

Seems like half the teams are drafting scared without any semblance of a plan and some teams are drafting bullheadedly according to plan without regard for the changing landscape.

But in the third round, a team should still be looking (to my mind) for a guy who could be a stud #1, not a guy who is going to be an average returner and maybe a slot guy.

Maybe it’s a tiered thing. The teams have 3 or 4 guys they like at a position they need, and when 2 of those guys are gone, they get worried and reach for the guy who is left.

And there goes another WR and another 2 CB’s. I’m liking this, and the more talent that falls, the better I feel about the Packers not having a third round pick.

Yes and no. I think you’ve got to draft based on need. The Lions don’t need a number one or really a number two, but they do need a special teams guy and a slot guy. However, does it outrank the laundry list of their other needs? I don’t think it’s even close. I think this pick is another “toy” to help the rookie quarterback stick around and become successful. They won’t play him the first year (in theory) because (again, in theory) the offense and its new pieces could jell by the time he’s ready.

I agree. The Lions need some big bodies on both lines and their names are being kept off the draft board right now.

Yeah, it’s just like a Fantasy Draft.

Tennessee is quietly having a great draft, I love Cook as a WR and I bet they play him like a WR more than a TE.

ETA: Well poop. There goes Johnson.

I like Cook also, and he’s a great value there. However, I’m not sold on Kenny Britt (his ego and his brains) but he certainly has great production. Marks I think was a good pick, but Mouton was a reach. I think the Titans are having an average draft.

And another two CBs. Great.

And there goes Rashard. I feel like they’re just teasing us fans by letting the guys we want drop to JUST BEFORE our team picks. Bastards.

God help you, Erin Andrews. You’re interviewing Bill Cosby as if there’s still a chance he’ll be funny.

Ooofa. Bill Cosby hasn’t aged well.

I’m totally lost on who the Bears ought to pick here. I suppose if we end up with a WR or a S I’ll be happy and have to just trust their scouting. Aaron Kelly from Clemson would at least fit the mold we need, but I question his production.

ETA: Juaquin Iglesias is the pick. He’s a WR and he’s ranked higher than this, so at least that’s a plus, but I’m not very high on him at all.
