2009 NFL Draft Day Conversation

I wonder if Moreno being gone (the most commonly projected pick for the Eagles, and though mocks are near useless, some info has to form the foundation of those guesses), and possibly Pettigrew being taken before Philly, will affect any trades they try to make with that first rounder. If they no longer are able to draft the players they wanted, maybe they are more open to trading the pick away?

Will the Brownies get a shot at Maclin? Do they want him?

Do the Chargers grab Beanie?

And the real question, how long do we have to wait until the Bears pick so I can mock it.

Chargers said earlier that they wouldn’t be drafting a RB in round 1…

Edit: Damn, I was hoping Larry English might fall to #36.

Little early for English, right?

Damn, I was hoping English would fall to the Pack in the second round!

Love English. He’s going to be awesome in that defense. I’m surprised that they took him over Ayers, even though I agree that English is better.

The wife stole the computer from me. Interesting Chargers pick.

I don’t know much about Maclin because he wasn’t in consideration for the #5, but based on what I’m reading elsewhere I think he’d be a nice value at #17.

Edit: new trade…

Them passing on Maclin here really suggests they’re not going to trade Edwards. Yay.

I feel like the AFC West teams are competing to make the worst picks.

Hey Beef, are the Browns ever going to draft?

As long as they get good value for the trades, keep it going…

Traded down 2 slots for the 191st pick. What is that, 5th rounder? Eh. I guess they’re confident their guy will be there in 2 slots.

Breaking news, Tampa unveils a new offensive scheme called the “Hydra.”

They line up QBs at QB, FB, and HB, and a QB at the zWR, including another QB at RG. This way they can throw from multiple spots. Of course they have to throw backwards each time, but they figure after four or five passes, they can launch it downfield for a five yard gain or so.

Watched a lot of Maclin in college, especially versus Illinois. He was very impressive and outplayed Vontae Davins. Whoever gets him will be very lucky at this point.

The Browns are reminding me of the Bears from a few years back. Trade down…and down…and down.

The Bucs are taking Josh Freeman. Strange move with the Leftwich signing, but I suppose Morris downplaying his past with Freeman was nothing but a smokescreen. Interesting, I’m not convinced he can play. He’s a little leadfooted and scatter shot.

Mid 6th. Not great value, but it’s something. Works for both teams, the Bucs get a guy they like and the Browns don’t lose out on anyone. Only the Broncos, if they wanted Freeman, is screwed. But I think they wanted Ayers anyway.

Aside from Chris Henry and Odell Thurman, what high draft picks have the Bengals used on character issue guys? Carson Palmer, Chris Perry, Johnathon Joseph, Andrew Whitworth, Leon Hall…

Sure they’ve taken some chances with fifth rounders (Jason Shirley, AJ Nicholson) and what not, but…those are the kinds of picks you can expend on guys like that, and all the other teams do it.

So seriously, did Tampa move up and take Freeman because Denver was about to take him with the next pick? I wonder.

Denver HAS to go defense here. Ayers would be a smart play. Then the Browns could get Matthews, Davis or Maclin. Tough to know which direction they’ll go but Maclin would be the best value and great opposite Edwards.

With Freeman and Ayers being selected at those picks it doesn’t change the situation at all. It was a free 6th rounder. Let’s go Maclin…

If Denver and Tampa both really wanted Freeman you’d think you could get them in a bidding war and get more than a 6th though.

They definitely thought they might, or they might trade back and someone else could come get him. I doubt the Broncos were seriously considering it though. At least the Bucs were proactive about it.

Okay, Eagles. Time to make that trade down about 10-15 picks. Get an extra 2 and trade it for Boldin …
